Role Overview
Location: London, UK
We are looking for a UK Tax Subject Matter Expert (SME) with strong knowledge of UK tax legislation, HMRC guidance, and tax calculation methodologies to support the design, validation, and testing of REQ-02.
The SME will work closely with the project/technology team to ensure that tax calculation logic, loss-relief treatment, apportionment, and related scenarios are aligned with current UK tax rules and expected HMRC outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and validate UK tax calculation methodologies against HMRC guidance.
- Validate tax-split calculations, loss-relief treatment, and apportionment logic before the REQ-02 build.
- Review tax rules and translate them into clear business/functional requirements for the technology team.
- Identify and validate complex tax scenarios and edge cases, including:
- Leavers and joiners
- Negative income
- Multiple partnerships
- Complex income/tax allocation scenarios
- Support the creation and validation of tax-sensitive test scenarios for SIT/UAT.
- Review calculated outputs and identify discrepancies against expected UK tax/HMRC outcomes.
- Provide expert guidance on interpretation and application of UK tax rules throughout the engagement.
- Work with business, technology, and testing teams to resolve tax-related issues and clarify requirements.
- Use AI-assisted tools where appropriate to support:
- Rule extraction and cross-checking against HMRC guidance
- Generation of complex tax test scenarios
- Comparison of calculated outputs against expected tax outcomes
- Ensure AI-generated analysis is appropriately reviewed and validated using UK tax expertise.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong experience as a UK Tax SME / UK Tax Specialist / Tax Consultant.
- Strong working knowledge of UK tax legislation and HMRC guidance.
- Experience with UK tax calculations, tax rules, and tax treatment methodologies.
- Experience reviewing or defining tax calculation logic and business rules.
- Strong experience in UAT/SIT, test scenario definition, and validation for tax-related systems.
- Experience handling complex tax scenarios such as loss relief, income allocation, apportionment, leavers/joiners, and partnerships.
- Ability to work closely with technology teams and translate tax requirements into functional/business requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Desirable
- Experience working on tax technology / tax calculation platforms / digital tax transformation projects.
- Experience using AI or generative AI tools for tax rule analysis, test-scenario generation, or output validation.
- Experience working with automated tax calculation and validation solutions.
- Previous experience working with financial services, professional services, or other regulated environments.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who combines deep UK tax expertise with strong technology/project exposure. This is not purely a traditional tax advisory role; the SME needs to be comfortable working with technology, requirements, testing, and automated tax calculations.
