UNDERGRADUATE INTERN – Population Health Science
We have an exciting opportunity for a student who is currently undertaking a degree in Public Health, Population Health, Data Science, Biomedical/Health Informatics, or a related discipline, ideally with relevant modules or interest in epidemiology, population health, health data or real-world evidence to join our Research & Science function, based in Southampton, for a 12-month undergraduate placement.
This placement is with our Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) Science team within the wider Global Life Science (GLS) department. THR seeks to reduce smoking-related harm by supporting adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke to switch completely to non-combustible tobacco and nicotine alternatives. Population evidence is used to understand who uses these products, how behaviours change, what health outcomes result, and what the potential overall impact on population health is likely to be.
The placement student will gain experience in evidence mapping, epidemiology, real-world evidence (RWE), surveillance, digital health and strategic scientific planning, while contributing to a priority project with clear business and scientific relevance.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Conduct structured literature searches in PubMed, Embase and review newly published epidemiology, RWE and surveillance studies
- Create and maintain evidence repository
- Create visual summaries of evidence strengths and gaps
- Compile an inventory of tobacco and nicotine surveillance systems and national health surveys/studies globally.
- Assess suitability of registries and databases for studying health outcomes.
- Map relevant digital health platforms and emerging evidence-generation approaches, including potential data-access opportunities.
- Create a database of relevant academic institutions, cohort owners and research networks.
- Contribute to scientific reports, white paper and/or manuscripts arising from the project, where appropriate.
- Work cross-functionally with colleagues across Health Outcomes, Digital & Data Sciences, Consumer Behaviour, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs to synthesise findings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
