UNDERGRADUATE INTERN – Scientific Affairs
Fixed-term (12 months)
We have an exciting opportunity for students who are currently undertaking a degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biosciences, Pharmacology, or similar scientific subject, to join our Research & Science function, based in Southampton, on a 12-month undergraduate placement.
The Scientific Affairs team plays a critical role in communicating BAT’s scientific evidence supporting Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) and shaping the external scientific narrative around Smokeless Products. To support this mission, we are seeking enthusiastic and motivated interns to join our team.

This role is ideal for a student looking to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting while developing valuable skills in communication, critical thinking, and stakeholder engagement.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Support development of scientific content and assets including fact sheets, slide decks, and summaries.
- Track and summarise emerging THR science, publications, and news.

- Support the development of stakeholder engagement digital platforms.
- Support tracking and reporting of scientific engagement activities and outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
