Due to an internal promotion, we're looking for a talented and experienced Underwriter to join our award-winning Underwriting Team at Darlington Building Society.
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career within a supportive organisation that genuinely invests in its people. You'll benefit from clear progression opportunities, ongoing development, and the chance to make a real difference by helping our members achieve their dream of homeownership.
About the Role
Are you an experienced Mortgage Underwriter who enjoys using your expertise to make informed lending decisions, rather than relying solely on automated systems?
Do you thrive on analysing complex cases, solving problems, and finding ways to say "yes" where others might say "no"?
If so, we'd love to hear from you.
At Darlington Building Society, we're passionate about giving our members every possible opportunity to own their own home. As a specialist lender, we take a manual underwriting approach, carefully assessing each application on its own merits and working closely with brokers to ensure every avenue has been explored.
This means thinking beyond standard criteria, applying sound judgement, and using your analytical skills to find the right solution for both our members and the Society.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
