I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

MGA experience would be particularly attractive, especially for someone who understands the pace, autonomy, and commercial decision-making involved in an MGA environment.
The opportunity
This would suit an Underwriter who has established themselves in the market and is now looking for greater responsibility, autonomy, and progression.
It is not necessarily a Head of Underwriting or senior management appointment. They are looking for someone who is already technically capable, has their own authority, and is ready to take the next step in their career within a specialist US Property underwriting environment.
Particularly relevant backgrounds
The strongest candidates are likely to have worked for:
- An MGA writing US Property / D&F Property
- A Lloyd's syndicate with a US Property book
- A London Market insurer underwriting US Property
- An underwriting platform with delegated authority across US Property
