State Bank of India (UK) Limited is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join our Credit Department. The role reports to the Chief Credit Officer and will be responsible for the processing and underwriting of Corporate, Commercial Real Estate (CRE), Buy-to-Let (BTL) and Personal Loan proposals.
The Role
As an Underwriter, you will be responsible for assessing and underwriting lending proposals, supporting the successful execution of transactions and ensuring appropriate management of credit risk in accordance with the Bank’s policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. You will work closely with the Originations team, Credit function, senior management, external solicitors and valuation firms, while supporting the Chief Credit Officer across the operational activities of the Credit Department.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite Corporate, Commercial Real Estate (CRE), Personal and Buy-to-Let (BTL) loans, ensuring the successful execution of transactions being pursued, together with related client and introducer relationship management.
- Manage the assessment and processing of lending proposals received from the business team and prepare/present proposals to the Sanctioning Committee.
- Take operational responsibility for the annual review process for the existing credit portfolio, ensuring borrowing requirements and covenants are being adhered to.
- Minimise credit risks associated with loan applications in accordance with the Bank’s operating policies and procedures.
- Undertake site visits as required.
- Liaise with the Originations team to establish a clear rationale for agreeing or rejecting applications prior to processing.
- Monitor the existing loan portfolio, identifying early arrears or potential problem accounts, and make appropriate recommendations.
- Ensure credit decisions are made within applicable regulatory standards and adhere to TCF principles and Customer First standards.
- Provide support to the Chief Credit Officer (CCO) across operational areas of the Credit Department.
- Liaise with solicitors and valuation firms to support the end-to-end delivery of credit proposals.
- Present to the Risk Committee and other UK management committees in relation to the introduction and renewal of new and existing products.

Demonstrable experience in underwriting/credit assessment of large corporate and commercial lending transactions, including syndicated loans, with the ability to analyse complex credit proposals and support transactions through the credit approval process.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate should have:
- 3–5 years’ experience in underwriting or assessing credit proposals.
- Good knowledge of the UK lending environment.
- Good knowledge of the UK regulatory framework, principles and rules.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
