Underwriter – Cargo & Freight

We are currently looking for a junior level Cargo & Freight Underwriter to be based in Birmingham on a full-time basis, reporting into the Underwriter & Team Leader.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start or develop their career in underwriting within a specialist Cargo & Freight environment. Whether you have experience in insurance, financial services, or another customer-focused commercial role, we are looking for individuals with the enthusiasm and potential to learn.

In this role, you will receive support and training to develop your underwriting skills while helping to build and maintain a profitable, well-balanced, and growing portfolio of business. You will work closely with experienced underwriters, gaining exposure to risk assessment, relationship management, and business development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and process new business, renewals, and mid-term adjustments within delegated authority levels
  • Develop and apply knowledge of Cargo & Freight insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk assessment
  • Build positive relationships with brokers delivering a high standard of service and responsiveness
  • Gather, review, and analyse underwriting information to support sound underwriting decisions and maintain a profitable, well-balanced portfolio
  • Plan and manage own workload to handle the team’s responsibilities efficiently and effectively
  • Participate in broker meetings, training sessions, and market activities to develop technical and commercial knowledge
  • Contribute ideas to improve processes, efficiency, and service delivery across the Cargo & Freight team
  • Take ownership of personal development, actively building technical underwriting knowledge, market awareness, and commercial understanding

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to review information and make informed decisions
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
  • Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload effectively
  • Confidence working with data, systems, and technology
  • Ability to learn new concepts and apply them in a practical business setting
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proactive approach with a willingness to take ownership of tasks and personal development
  • Strong customer service mindset, with a focus on delivering a positive broker experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, Teams, and Outlook

Desirable

  • Previous experience within insurance or financial services
  • Exposure to broker-facing or relationship management activities
  • An understanding of Cargo, Marine &/or Freight Insurance
