About the Role
To underwrite a profitable portfolio of Casualty Treaty business within the London Market, delivering sustainable growth through disciplined risk selection, strong broker relationships, technical underwriting expertise and effective portfolio management. The role is responsible for achieving underwriting performance targets while operating within delegated underwriting authority, risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
The Casualty Treaty Underwriter will act as a recognised technical specialist within the team, contributing to underwriting strategy, mentoring junior colleagues and supporting the continued development of the Argenta Casualty portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting
- Underwrite Casualty risks in accordance with delegated authority and underwriting appetite.
- Evaluate submissions, price risks appropriately and negotiate terms and conditions.
- Exercise sound underwriting judgement to achieve profitable growth.
- Prepare and present referrals where required.
- Ensure underwriting files and decision-making are fully documented and compliant.
- Participate in the development of business plans, budgets, and long-term objectives.
- Use market, financial, operational, and client insights to help shape and challenge business strategy.
- Identify risks, opportunities, and emerging trends that could affect business performance.
- Support leadership decision-making with data, experience, and commercial judgment.

Portfolio Management
- Manage an allocated portfolio to deliver premium, profitability and growth objectives.
- Monitor loss ratio, rate adequacy, exposure management and accumulation metrics.
- Identify portfolio trends and recommend corrective action where necessary.
- Support business planning and portfolio optimisation initiatives.
Broker and Market Relationships
- Build and maintain strong relationships with London Market and Lloyd's brokers.
- Represent the business in broker meetings, market presentations and industry events.
- Develop new business opportunities consistent with underwriting strategy.
- Enhance the profile and reputation of the Casualty account within the market.
Technical Expertise
- Provide technical guidance and referral support to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
- Maintain strong awareness of casualty market developments, legal trends and claims activity.
- Contribute to wording discussions and product development activities.
- Promote underwriting discipline and best practice across the team.
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with underwriting authorities, Lloyd's Minimum Standards and internal governance requirements.
- Operate in accordance with FCA, PRA and Lloyd's regulatory expectations.
- Support audit, risk management and exposure management activities.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and management information.
Team Contribution
- Mentor and support the development of assistant and developing underwriters.
- Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive and high-performance culture.
- Share knowledge and market intelligence across the underwriting function.
- Support strategic projects and wider underwriting initiatives.

Financial Accountability
- Delivery of premium income and profitability targets for the allocated portfolio.
- Underwriting performance against planned loss ratio and combined ratio objectives.
- Portfolio retention, rate change and new business growth.
- Effective deployment of underwriting capacity within delegated authority.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Significant Casualty underwriting experience in the Lloyd's or London Market.
- Proven track record of profitable underwriting performance.
- Strong technical knowledge of Casualty classes and coverage.
- Established broker relationships.
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills.
- Commercially focused with strong analytical capability.
- Experience operating within delegated underwriting authority.
- Strong understanding of Lloyd's and FCA regulatory requirements.
- Ability to assess complex risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
Desirable
- ACII qualified or working towards qualification.
- Experience of international casualty business.
- Exposure to portfolio management and business planning.
- Experience mentoring or developing junior underwriters.
