The Role

The DANA team writes a book of USD170m+ GPI across multiple lines of business including Commercial Property, Homeowners Property, Commercial Automobile Physical Damage, Commercial Automobile Liability, and Commercial General Liability. We write this business throughout North America as well as in Canada and the US Virgin Islands.

We are looking for a senior underwriter to work closely with the Head of Delegated Authorities across these disciplines to meet the requirements of the business plans and the strategic targets for premium income, profitability, and return on capital as set out by the Board.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To underwrite delegated business in accordance with the Syndicate Business Plan for the division and within the terms of the underwriting authority given.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with brokers and clients to establish Canopius as a preferred market for North American binder business.
  • Working alongside the DANA team, underwrite and oversee the renewal of our existing business as well as identify and develop new business opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with other underwriting and support units within Canopius to maximize efficient use of internal company resources to support business activities.
  • To ensure that all business written complies with Canopius internal policies, procedures, and controls and that these are understood and adhered to by the team.
  • To ensure that business is only accepted through intermediaries and coverholders approved by Canopius in accordance with internal procedures.
  • To ensure that complete and accurate underwriting records are maintained.
  • To promote a culture where clients' needs are placed at the heart of underwriting decision-making and business is conducted in a manner that meets Canopius internal standards and FCA guidelines.
  • To actively assist and supervise the development of junior members of the team.
  • To ensure that the workplace environment is fair, equitable, collaborative, supportive, and respectful and one which encourages and increases the participation and contribution of all employees, irrespective of difference.
  • To provide reports and management information to the Head of Delegated Authorities, as required.
  • Work with the Syndicate actuaries, to assist in the establishment of reserves for the portfolio.
  • To ensure the risk environment is assessed regularly and that appropriate controls are put in place to mitigate loss, including exposure management and the assessment of Realistic Disaster Scenarios.

  • Significant experience in the North American delegated authority market.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Previous management experience preferable.
  • Organised, methodical, quick thinker.
  • Demonstrable problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage workload priorities effectively.
  • Desire to expand knowledge within the industry via professional exams.
  • Data mining, statistical modelling, and data visualisation.
  • Experience with Power BI is preferable but not essential.
  • High-level understanding of Excel, should be proficient in creating complex formulae.
  • Highly numerate and logical – strong mathematical/statistical knowledge is advantageous.
  • Ability to interpret large volumes of data and present in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to articulate findings in writing and/or in person both internally and externally.
  • Interpret written guidelines for Underwriting rules and apply to real-life scenarios.
