Environmental Underwriter

Job Purpose

To develop, underwrite and manage the Environmental account, delivering sustainable growth and profitability in line with the business unit’s strategic plan and delegated underwriting authority.

Detailed Duties

  • Execute on Ascot’s Environmental go-to-market business plan.
  • Grow and scale a book of business within the Syndicate’s existing Casualty portfolio.
  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of the portfolio through execution of individual risk underwriting and adherence to the strategic plan of the business unit.
  • Collaborate with Ascot Group colleagues in London and the US.
  • Build underwriting guidelines, forms library, and marketing materials.
  • Underwrite and negotiate complex Site Pollution and Contractors Pollution Liability policies to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Monitor premiums, costs, and claims ratios per contract and take corrective measures if necessary to ensure long-term profitability at account level.
  • Work independently within delegated underwriting authority and make referrals as required.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with Ascot peers, leaders, and internal partners across functional areas to identify cross-selling opportunities, rate adequacy, and operational excellence.
  • Foster and maintain external relationships with brokers to market and sell Ascot’s products.
  • Operate with underwriting integrity by adhering to the Environmental guidelines, with the goal of achieving profitability over top-line growth.
  • Provide meaningful and constructive feedback to regional and home-office management to improve processes, identify efficiencies, and be more relevant to the customer.
  • Analyze internally generated and third-party data to improve the underwriter productivity of the group and the broker experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with broker security requirements. Check that individual brokers adhere to their individual credit limits and that a TOBA is in place prior to quoting business with an unauthorized broker.
  • Ensure compliance with Lloyds licencing requirements.
  • Assist with completion of sanctions checks.
  • Completion of annual compliance training.
  • Compliance bulletin review and action, where required.
  • Ensure that Downgrade Clauses comply with Ascot’s Down Grade Clause Policy.

Administration

  • Ensure that the account administration is at all times up to date for relevant class(es), including responding to queries raised by Administrators promptly.
  • Work closely with Assistants and accept overall responsibility for administration.
  • Ensure Claims data discrepancies between submission and S2000 are reported.

Facultative Reinsurance Purchasing

  • Ensure that the purchasing of facultative reinsurance is done so in accordance with the RI purchase procedures.
  • Ensure that any agreed endorsements that could affect the facultative reinsurance programme are notified to the Reinsurance Team.
  • Work closely with the Reinsurance Department to ensure all cover notes are logged onto the system and to ensure overall compliance with the latest Reinsurance procedures.

Aggregates

  • Check that there is available aggregate prior to quoting.
  • Ensure that all aggregate information is recorded at the required level of detail.

Attendance

  • Attendance at the monthly underwriter meetings.
  • Attendance at monthly Claims meetings.

Credit Control

  • Manage the credit control issues for the class(es) including close liaison with Assistant Underwriters, Capita, and brokers.

Marketing

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key brokers within the insurance market.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients.
  • Represent Ascot at appropriate market groups and committees.

Working Knowledge of Systems

  • Crystal/Lloyds QA Tool
  • S2000 (Subscribe)
  • Swordfish
  • GAAP

Other duties

  • Ad-hoc duties as directed by line management.
  • Implementation of new procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience.
  • Experience with monoline Environmental products including Site Pollution and Contractors Pollution liability.
  • Deep knowledge of Environmental insurance products, insurance regulations, and the insurance industry.
  • Strong collaborative and critical thinking skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Excellent organizational, desk management, and prioritization skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be positive, self-motivated, and possess strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Possess strong technical, analytical, and quantitative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers.
  • Solution-oriented team player with a strong relationship management skill set working with both internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
