Underwriter – Cargo & Freight

We are currently looking for a Underwriter – Cargo & Freight to be based in Birmingham on a full-time basis, reporting into the Underwriter & Team Leader.

In this role you will be responsible for achieving and maintaining a profitable, well-balanced, and growing portfolio with allocated intermediaries and customers to support the long-term trading objectives of the Company.

Responsibilities

  • Work on site with intermediaries/customers, managing end-to-end handling of straightforward cases to deliver joint business development plans aligned with the Company’s trading strategy.
  • Make effective on-site decisions within delegated authority to ensure efficient completion of work for allocated intermediaries.
  • Collaborate with the Cargo & Freight Underwriting Manager, Head of Underwriting Operations, and underwriting team to build strong relationships with intermediaries, balancing their needs with the Company’s trading and growth objectives.
  • Plan and manage own workload to handle the team’s responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
  • Contribute to team effectiveness by suggesting improvements to work systems and processes.
  • Take ownership of customer enquiries and allocated correspondence to provide high-quality service.
  • Identify, define, and close business opportunities, involving other staff members as needed.
  • Serve as a reference point for allocated intermediaries/customers, escalating complex issues appropriately to maintain high service standards.
  • Foster open communication and collaboration across all business lines and the sales and development functions.
  • Promote good Conduct practices, understanding escalation procedures and governance responsibilities related to Conduct Risk within relevant committees and the Board.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Build and maintain strong internal relationships with team members, the Claims Department, the Distribution Team, the Syndicate, and the Directors.
  • Build and maintain strong external relationships with a range of contacts within allocated intermediaries and customers.
  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of underwriting knowledge.
  • Interpret and effectively use management information.
  • Learn and understand established systems and processes with willingness and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate passion for delivering excellent customer service.
  • Prioritize own work and effectively manage workload.
