An established global specialty (re)insurance business is looking to appoint an experienced Marine Cargo Underwriter to join its London-based Marine team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an underwriter with a strong London Market background to take responsibility for a high-quality international cargo portfolio, working across both primary and excess business. The role will involve underwriting worldwide general cargo risks covering transit and storage, with exposure to physical damage and, where appropriate, financial consequence covers.

You will play an important role in delivering the Marine team's underwriting strategy, identifying profitable opportunities and developing long-term broker and client relationships. The successful candidate will have the technical capability and market credibility to take ownership of risks, contribute to portfolio development and operate with a meaningful level of underwriting authority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business and renewals across a worldwide Marine Cargo portfolio.
  • Assess risk quality, exposure and pricing to ensure disciplined and profitable underwriting.
  • Take a lead role on appropriate risks, including negotiating terms, coverage and policy wordings.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Marine Cargo business plan and underwriting strategy.
  • Identify opportunities for profitable portfolio growth while maintaining appropriate risk selection.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Lloyd's and London Market brokers and key clients.
  • Provide technical guidance on coverage, policy construction and complex risk exposures.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, market conditions and emerging risks to support informed underwriting decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with Claims, Actuarial, Exposure Management, Reinsurance and other internal teams.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of market developments, competitor activity and relevant legal or regulatory changes.
  • Ensure all underwriting activity is conducted within agreed authorities, governance frameworks and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent the business at broker meetings, client meetings and relevant industry events.
  • Support the development of junior members of the team through knowledge sharing and mentoring.
  • Contribute ideas and improvements to underwriting processes, systems and portfolio management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
