New Business Underwriter - Protection

Contract

  • Initial 3-month contract, with potential extension

Location

  • UK-based / Fully Remote

Rate

  • Varies depending on experience (Outside IR35)

Overview

We are looking for experienced New Business Underwriters to support a UK Life & Pensions business experiencing increased demand underwriting

You will join an existing underwriting function, supporting the assessment and underwriting of new protection business and helping the organisation manage increased volumes while maintaining quality, service, and turnaround times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business applications in line with company underwriting guidelines and appetite.
  • Assess applicant medical, financial, and lifestyle information to determine appropriate underwriting decisions.
  • Review and assess risks across a range of protection products.
  • Make appropriate underwriting decisions, including acceptance, exclusions, loadings, postponements, or declines where applicable.
  • Work collaboratively with existing underwriting teams and other stakeholders.
  • Manage a pipeline of cases while maintaining appropriate quality and turnaround times.
  • Apply underwriting authority and guidelines consistently.
  • Escalate complex or high-risk cases where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the wider underwriting operation during a period of increased demand.

We're potentially looking for a blend of Junior, Mid-Level, and Senior Underwriters, rather than one specific level of experience.

Essential

  • Previous experience in UK Life & Protection underwriting
  • Strong new business underwriting experience
  • Experience assessing protection applications and making underwriting decisions
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Strong understanding of underwriting guidelines and risk assessment

Desirable

  • Experience across multiple protection products
  • Experience handling higher-complexity cases
  • Experience working within a high-volume underwriting environment
  • Ability to support/mentor less experienced underwriters
