Role overview

We are hiring an Underwriter to help grow our US Property book within specialty MGA. You will underwrite US property risks within your own delegated authority, supported by and working closely with senior underwriters.

Reports to: Senior Underwriter / Head of Property

Location: London (hybrid)

Business written: US E&S property, primary and excess layers, including catastrophe-exposed risks

Distribution: US brokers, London market brokers and cover holder partners

Key responsibilities

  • Review submissions, SOVs, COPE data and loss history, and prepare quotes within your authority.
  • Price and structure US commercial property risks, setting deductibles, sub-limits and terms.
  • Run and interpret cat modelling and rating tool output for wind, quake, wildfire and convective storm exposures.
  • Prepare clear referrals to senior underwriters for risks outside your authority.
  • Handle renewals, mid-term adjustments and endorsements accurately and on time.

Portfolio support

  • Help track GWP, rate change, aggregates and loss ratio against the business plan.
  • Support portfolio reviews, capacity provider reporting and business planning.

Delegated authority

  • Help review cover holder bordereaux, check them against the signed slip and all endorsements, and flag exceptions.
  • Take part in binder audits and performance reviews.

Brokers and market

  • Build relationships with brokers and respond quickly to their queries.
  • Attend broker meetings and market events alongside senior colleagues.

Governance

  • Keep underwriting files complete and audit-ready.
  • Follow Lloyd's minimum standards, capacity provider guidelines, sanctions checks and US surplus lines requirements.

Skills and experience required

  • 3–6 years' underwriting experience, including at least 2 years on US property.
  • Experience writing business within your own authority, or ready to step up to it.
  • Good technical grasp of US property risk: occupancy, construction, valuation and cat exposure.
  • Comfortable using cat modelling output and rating tools to support pricing decisions.
  • Working knowledge of policy wordings, endorsements and US E&S / surplus lines practice.
  • Experience in a Lloyd's syndicate, MGA or London company market.
  • Strong Excel and data skills.

Desirable experience

  • Exposure to delegated authority, such as binders, cover holders or bordereaux management.
  • Experience with specialist property lines like builders' risk, habitational or real estate portfolios.
  • An existing network of US wholesale or London market property brokers.
  • ACII qualification, or working towards it.
  • Familiarity with PPL, Whitespace or a modern underwriting workbench.

  • Analytical, with sound judgement and a disciplined approach to risk.
  • Keen to learn and to grow into a senior underwriting role.
  • Clear, responsive communicator with brokers and colleagues.
  • Highly organised, with strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative and comfortable in a fast-moving MGA.
