For someone who has underwritten inside a lender and held their own mandate.
Engagement: Day-rate contractor, ongoing rolling engagement
Pattern: Flexible. Days booked as we need them, typically 1 to 3 days per week.
Location: UK, fully remote. Occasional in-person at Curvestone or client site if useful.
WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS
Curvestone AI is the oversight platform for financial services. Our workflows are live on real cases with brokers, packagers and lenders across the UK mortgage market. We are now doubling down on the lender side with agents that assess a case the way an underwriter would, against criteria, policy, income, affordability and security. That means bringing more underwriting expertise in house, to shape the judgement those agents apply. We're looking for a senior practitioner who learns our products, knows our standards, shapes what we test for, and becomes a trusted human judgement layer behind our AI.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Shaping what the agents check:
- Set out how an experienced underwriter works a case: what you look at, in what order, and what makes you stop
- Review agent output on real and synthetic cases and judge whether the reasoning would stand up in a second line review
- Help us turn lender credit policy and criteria into checks an agent can be tested against
- Curate benchmark case sets, including the edge cases, with the answer an experienced underwriter would give and why
- Flag what a lender would expect a reviewer to catch that our scope does not cover yet
Reasons to use Rodeo
I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Testing, as each workflow reaches UAT:
- Execute UAT test scripts against whichever lending workflow is in active testing
- Judge whether the AI reached the decision an experienced underwriter would: policy and criteria fit, income treatment, affordability, credit profile, security acceptability, and the conditions raised
- Document defects clearly so engineering can reproduce and fix
- Re-execute scripts after bug fixes
- Flag edge cases the scripts do not cover that a real underwriter would catch
The lending workflows, in build order:
- Criteria and policy fit at the point a case arrives
- Income and affordability, including self-employed, contractor and variable income
- Full case assessment and the decision rationale behind it
- Security, valuation and offer conditions
WHAT YOU NEED
- 5+ years underwriting residential or specialist mortgage cases, the majority of it inside an FCA-regulated lender or building society
- Held a personal lending mandate and signed cases off in your own name, and can explain where you would have referred rather than decided
- Strong grasp of credit policy and criteria: income assessment, affordability and stress testing, adverse credit, LTV and security acceptability, and documentary evidence standards
- Confident at the exception end of the book: cases that do not fit policy cleanly, referrals, and the judgement calls in between
- Have seen how your decisions played out afterwards, through audit, QA or second line challenge
- Able to explain your own reasoning, not just reach a decision. A large part of the value here is in the why
- Comfortable working closely with a product and engineering team as workflows are built
- Confident documenting findings in writing: clear, specific, reproducible
- Self-directed. Able to work at pace without close supervision
- Curious about where AI judgement holds up and where it doesn't — you'll be the one deciding
