Underwriting Assistant

This position is responsible for supporting the Underwriting team in the effective administration and management of new and renewal business across multiple classes of insurance. The role plays a key part in ensuring underwriting activities are completed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with regulatory, governance and operational requirements.

Working closely with Underwriters and other key stakeholders across the business, the Underwriting Assistant will support the preparation, analysis and presentation of risk information, assist with rating and catastrophe modelling activities, maintain underwriting records and contribute to the delivery of a high-quality service to brokers and business partners.

The successful candidate will be a highly organised and analytical individual with strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem solving. They will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and building effective relationships both internally and externally. The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to technical underwriting practices and develop a long-term career within the insurance market.

This is an ideal opportunity for a recent graduate or individual who has completed an Underwriting Apprenticeship and is looking to build a strong foundation within underwriting, working alongside experienced professionals whilst developing technical knowledge and commercial understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Underwriters across a range of insurance classes in the administration and servicing of new and renewal business.
  • Create and maintain references for new and renewal accounts, ensuring all information is recorded accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare and organise risk information, including setting up underwriting files, supporting rating activities and assisting with catastrophe modelling requirements.
  • Present risk information and supporting analysis to Underwriters to assist with underwriting decisions.
  • Support ad hoc projects and portfolio reviews through the collection, analysis and reporting of underwriting data.
  • Maintain awareness of developments and trends affecting the classes of business supported and escalate relevant matters to Underwriters or Underwriting Management where appropriate.
  • Ensure all risks are progressed and recorded accurately within underwriting systems and risk tracking tools, maintaining an appropriate audit trail of underwriting decisions and outcomes.
  • Act as a Team Data Steward, supporting data quality initiatives and working collaboratively with colleagues across the business to improve data integrity.
  • Assist with late payment reporting, EPI queries and data quality monitoring activities, liaising with Credit Control, Compliance and other stakeholders as required.
  • Work closely with Actuarial, Operations, Compliance and other business functions to support underwriting activities and pricing processes.
  • Manage internal and external queries in a professional, timely and efficient manner.
  • Conduct accuracy checks and prepare underwriting documentation, notes and records to support underwriting sign-off processes.
  • Assist in the monitoring of premium payments and liaise with brokers and relevant internal teams regarding outstanding items where necessary.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with brokers and business partners to support the successful delivery of underwriting objectives.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with company policies, regulatory requirements and underwriting governance standards.
  • Develop proficiency across all relevant underwriting systems, tools and processes.
  • Undertake additional duties and projects as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Recently graduated with a degree in a relevant discipline achieving a minimum 2:1 classification, or completion of an Underwriting Apprenticeship programme.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to interpret and work with data accurately.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive working relationships.
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach, demonstrating initiative and accountability for delivering high-quality work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to identify practical solutions.
  • Professional attitude and strong work ethic, with a genuine interest in developing a career within underwriting and the wider insurance industry.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
