The opportunity:
Underwriting Support Services (USS) is a centralised team based in our London Fenchurch Street office. We provide a high-quality, timely and accurate data capture and administrative support to our London Market underwriting teams. The team supports a broad range of classes of business, including Marine, Energy, Professional Liability, Cyber and Specialty lines. Our role is to ensure underwriting information is processed, uploaded and quality checked in line with agreed standards and service expectations. USS plays an important part in supporting efficient underwriting operations by managing insurance policy data, undertaking quality assurance activity and responding to technical and process queries from the business.
What you’ll be doing:
- Perform data entry of insurance policy information into in-house systems to agreed, defined standards of accuracy and timeliness.
- Develop a broad class of business knowledge, to support the centralised team model and also specialise in a specific class of business, to become a main point of contact for the underwriting team.
- Manage your daily workflow and business queries efficiently, liaising with both your line manager and underwriting team to support productivity targets.
- Monitor and maintain data accuracy levels, utilising QC reporting and dashboards.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the underwriting teams and attend underwriting meetings when required.
- Engage with training opportunities and support Markel’s progress with process optimisation, automation and AI initiatives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
