Company Description

The UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Engineering (DRR&R-E) focuses on assessing disaster risk and enhancing the resilience of schools and their supporting critical infrastructure against climate change and multiple natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, strong winds, landslides, and fire. Its primary objective is to co-create and disseminate a common culture of integrated resilience and sustainability for educational facilities and associated infrastructure. The Chair emphasizes engineering-based solutions that are closely integrated with social and financial dimensions of resilience. It is strongly informed by recent technological advances and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Role Description

The UNESCO Chair in DRR&R-E Research Fellow is a full-time, on-site role based in London. The Research Fellow will conduct quantitative and qualitative research on disaster risk assessment, resilience engineering for schools and critical infrastructure, and climate-related hazards risk modelling.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Developing and testing engineering solutions
  • Analyzing multi-hazard risk scenarios
  • Preparing technical reports and academic publications
  • Contributing to research proposals and project documentation

The role involves collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, engaging with external partners and stakeholders, and supporting the co-creation of resilience frameworks and guidelines. The Research Fellow will also contribute to knowledge dissemination through seminars, workshops, teaching support, and outreach activities aligned with the Chair’s mission.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • Strong expertise in disaster risk reduction, resilience engineering, and multi-hazard risk assessment.
  • Skills in structural or civil engineering analysis, infrastructure resilience assessment, and performance-based engineering methods.
  • Skills in quantitative research methods, data analysis, modelling and simulation, and handling geospatial or hazard-related datasets.
  • Skills in interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating engineering with social, environmental, and financial dimensions of resilience.
  • Skills in technical writing, preparation of reports and academic papers, and clear communication of complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Skills in project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and participation in workshops, seminars, or policy-oriented discussions.

Relevant qualifications include a PhD (or near completion) or equivalent research experience in civil/structural engineering, resilience engineering, disaster risk reduction, or a closely related field.

Additional beneficial skills include familiarity with climate change adaptation frameworks, knowledge of international DRR standards (e.g., Sendai Framework), experience working with schools or public infrastructure, and demonstrated ability to work in multicultural teams.
