Salary: £68,000 + bonus

Drive Performance Across a Multi-Site Operation

As Unit Manager, you'll take full accountability for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of our Dagenham business unit, encompassing our Wharf, Depot, Asphalt Drum Plant, and Batch Plant. You'll lead a diverse team, optimise resources, enhance customer service, and drive continuous improvement across every area of the business. This is an opportunity for an ambitious operational leader to make a real impact, combining strategic thinking with a hands-on approach to deliver outstanding safety, operational, and financial results.

What You'll Be Doing

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Drive a zero-harm culture and lead the site to achieve the highest standards of health and safety performance.
  • Deliver continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Heidelberg Materials' Health & Safety Plan.
  • Lead environmental compliance and improvement activities in line with the Environmental Management Plan.
  • Ensure all operations are conducted safely, responsibly, and sustainably.

Operational Leadership

  • Lead, direct, and motivate operational teams across the Dagenham unit.
  • Deliver operational KPIs in line with business objectives while maintaining the lowest practical operating costs.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities to enhance productivity, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Maximise utilisation of shared assets, mobile plant, equipment, and people across the site.

Financial & Commercial Performance

  • Take full ownership of multi-site operational budgets and cost management.
  • Deliver robust forecasting, financial reporting, and performance analysis.
  • Monitor and control revenue expenditure, maintenance costs, and capital investment projects.
  • Support profit improvement initiatives through operational excellence and business performance analysis.

Customer & Quality Focus

  • Work closely with Logistics, Technical, and Commercial teams to deliver best-in-class customer service.
  • Support major contracts and strategic customers through operational excellence.
  • Ensure product quality standards are consistently achieved while driving efficiency.

Leadership & People Development

  • Provide visible, hands-on leadership across all areas of the operation.
  • Build an inclusive, accountable, and high-performing culture aligned with Heidelberg Materials values.
  • Develop site management teams through coaching, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Manage performance effectively, recognising high performers while addressing underperformance where required.
  • Ensure teams are appropriately resourced, trained, and capable of meeting future business needs.

Asset & Resource Management

  • Ensure maintenance strategies maximise reliability, minimise downtime, and optimise asset life.
  • Implement preventative maintenance programmes across all operational areas.
  • Support capital projects and asset improvement initiatives to enhance operational capability.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven operational leadership experience within Aggregates, Asphalt, heavy industry, construction materials, manufacturing, logistics, processing, or a similarly complex operational environment.
  • Strong people leadership skills with experience leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience managing operational performance, budgets, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental management.
  • Ability to analyse operational and financial data to drive business performance.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Higher-level vocational or academic qualification.
  • NVQ/QCF Level 5 or Level 7 in SHE or Quarry Operations (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of two years' relevant management experience.
  • Experience managing multiple operational sites and complex plant operations is highly desirable.
