Unix/Linux Infrastructure Engineer (Contract)
Contract Length: 12 months
Location: London (Hybrid – 2–3 days onsite per week)
Rate: £550–£700 per day (Inside IR35)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Unix/Linux Infrastructure Engineer to provide BAU operational support across a large-scale enterprise Linux estate within a financial services environment. The infrastructure primarily consists of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), supporting business-critical applications and enterprise infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for infrastructure support, incident management, patching, security, change implementation, and maintaining high service availability. The role also includes participation in an out-of-hours support rota.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide BAU operational support across enterprise Unix/Linux infrastructure, ensuring platform stability and availability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure incidents, including P1/P2 escalations, working closely with application and infrastructure teams.
- Administer and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, including patching, upgrades, and security compliance.
- Manage Red Hat Satellite and Capsule Servers within DMZ environments, including patch distribution and lifecycle management.
- Deploy, configure, and troubleshoot Microsoft Defender for Linux, supporting endpoint security and vulnerability management.
- Perform routine administration, including filesystem management, capacity planning, logging, certificates, and user access.
- Coordinate infrastructure changes, vendor support, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery testing.
- Maintain operational documentation and participate in scheduled maintenance and on-call support.

Required Experience
Essential
- Extensive experience supporting enterprise Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments (RHEL 7/8/9).
- Strong background in BAU infrastructure support within large-scale enterprise environments.
- Experience supporting business-critical production infrastructure, managing incidents, and implementing infrastructure changes.
- Experience working with ITSM tooling, third-party vendors, and formal change management processes.
- Excellent troubleshooting, stakeholder management, and communication skills.

Technical Skills
Essential
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 7/8/9) administration and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience supporting Unix/Linux infrastructure underpinning the Murex platform.
- Microsoft Defender for Linux, including deployment, configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Red Hat Satellite and Capsule Server administration, including deployments and patch management within DMZ environments.
- Linux patching, security hardening, and vulnerability remediation.
- Enterprise server and storage infrastructure, including SAN and Fibre Channel.
- Linux networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, NTP, and firewall connectivity.
- Bash scripting and working knowledge of Python.
- Backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within financial services, ideally investment banking or capital markets.
- Ansible and infrastructure automation.
- Kubernetes or OpenShift.
- VMware and Azure infrastructure.
- Monitoring and observability tooling.
- LDAP/Active Directory integration with Linux.
