Accounting Officer (UK-based candidates) – Volunteer

About the Role

The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is an international volunteers-led think tank that champions the application of blockchain technology to combat climate change. We are seeking a passionate Volunteer Accounting Officer (EU-based) to support our financial operations, including data collection, analysis, reporting, budgeting, and VAT compliance—all critical to shaping global climate policy through emerging technology.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining accurate financial records and general ledger postings;
  • Support the preparation and monitoring of budgets and forecasts;
  • Reconcile bank accounts monthly, verify deposits, and address bank inquiries;
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns while ensuring compliance with regulations;
  • Assist in compiling financial performance reports for senior management;
  • Provide explanations for budget variances and aid in re-forecasting;
  • Collaborate with auditors and financial analysts to ensure precise reporting;
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Technical Skills

  • Strong financial management expertise (essential);
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Familiarity with climate change, climate finance, and blockchain technology (preferred).

Requirements

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or an equivalent professional accounting qualification (preferably with a formal certification).

Experience

  • Accounting or financial operations experience, with a focus on VAT reporting;
  • Ability to build constructive relationships with stakeholders;
  • Experience working independently or within teams, demonstrating initiative;
  • Prior exposure to international NGO operations (desirable but not mandatory);
  • Experience in budget formulation, financial planning, and corporate strategy (a plus);
  • High-level Excel proficiency (spreadsheet capabilities);
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite or comparable software.

Interview Stages (Progression Based on Assessment Scores)
