Overview Of Urban Design Learning

Urban Design Learning (UDL) is a network and training organisation hosted by Transport for London. It was founded in 2004 by two London borough officers and two councillors to support London public sector-built environment professionals understand the relatively new idea of ‘urban design’ at that time. Since then, UDL’s mission has been to provide training and support to local authority officers and councilors. We work across professional silos and bring together planners, highway engineers, councillors, housing officers, regeneration specialists, transport planners, landscape architects and heritage experts to help them deliver and maintain high quality places. We facilitate training, networking and better understanding within and between England’s built environment community, for example helping planners understand the work of architects and helping transport consultants understand the work of TfL and borough highway officers.

We have become one of the nation’s leading providers of training for built environment professionals and are a very cost-effective provider of continuing professional development to our subscribing members.

We deliver over 100 events per year. These include highly practical skills-based training sessions relevant to our members’ jobs, thought provoking and awareness raising debates and discussions, site visits and case studies to learn from, as well as opportunities for informal networking between member organisations.

Overview Of The Role

We are looking for an inspired, enthusiastic, and hard-working person to join the UDL team for up to a year. You will attend and help deliver our events and will have the opportunity to learn about planning, housing, streets and public space design thinking and best practice in England. You will work closely with UDL’s Business Manager and Events Officer.

We expect applicants to have a strong interest in the built environment. They must have, or be working towards, a degree or professional qualification in planning, highway engineering, architecture, urban design or other built environment field. They will need a good level of understanding of the sector and specialist terms used within the industry to draft notes and event takeaways.

We are also looking for someone with good organisational, communications and IT skills, with a sharp attention to detail.

Applicants will benefit if they are familiar with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Miro, Vimeo, InDesign, websites and databases.

You will also have the opportunity to meet many built environment practitioners and will need to be good at communicating with people, with the ability to prepare summaries of debates, writing clearly and intelligently.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
