Job Summary
Whitstable Medical Practice has an exciting opportunity for a UTC HCA/Technician to work alongside our Practitioners within our Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).
We welcome applications from either HCAs or A&E Technicians who are interested in full time. The rate of pay will be dependent on experience.
Main duties of the job
To work as a team member under supervision of the Emergency Practitioners within the UTC to provide and maintain an optimum level of care for our patients.
The services we provide are constantly developing. The post holder will need a can-do attitude and a willingness to develop their own skills to meet the changing needs of the department.

JOB SUMMARY
This role encompasses a range of duties, which ultimately will assist in the delivery of a high standard of personalised care to patients and their relatives/carers.
Below is an outline of some core duties, which you will be expected to undertake at any time, together with more specific areas of work. The specific areas can be grouped into 2 main elements, these being general assistance and clinical.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES UTC Technician Job Duties and Key result areas
A Core Duties
- To act as a point of contact for patients, relatives and carers ensuring they feel welcome in the department, kept aware of information, offered reassurance and generally dealt with in a helpful, friendly and courteous manner.
- To help in the maintenance of the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the patient at all times.
- To assist with general duties such as taking and relaying telephone messages; photocopying and scanning documents; emailing fracture clinic requests as required.
- To move small items including, clinical supplies, stationery, specimens and small pieces of equipment as appropriate.
- To assist in keeping the department tidy i.e. picking up litter, mopping up small amounts of spillages, in accordance with policies.
- To report any environmental and equipment faults in accordance with procedures e.g. dripping taps, faulty light bulbs etc.
- To maintain an awareness in relation to security in the department and to report potential problems to the appropriate staff.
- To comply with Health and Safety Policies as instructed by Whitstable Medical Practice to include reporting of all accidents and incidents, summoning help for any emergency etc.
- To undertake any other duties as appropriate.
B To Provide General Help And Assistance Including:
- To maintain a visible presence in the Department and be ready to assist with/respond to any request.
- To transfer patients and relatives/carers, by means of a wheelchair, to other areas of the practice.
- To move items of equipment, including stores, as requested.
- To keep the Department, both clinical and storage areas, prepared and well stocked at all times.
- To ensure trolleys/wheelchairs are maintained in good and safe working order and kept clean.
- To check all gas cylinders and change them when necessary.
- Fill the hand-held liquid nitrogen if needed
- Check vaccine refrigerators daily and record temperature
- To ensure that there are sufficient patient information and advice leaflets
C To Assist With Clinical Aspects Of Patient Care:
Direct patient care duties will be carried out under the direction and supervision of trained nursing staff.
- To offer reassurance to and remain with vulnerable patients whilst in the Department.
- To assist nursing staff in preparing patients for clinical assessment or treatment e.g. removing dressings, cleaning wounds.
- To administer treatments as directed by nursing staff e.g. assisting with the application of dressings and having an awareness of oxygen therapy.
- To administer treatments as directed by nursing staff e.g. application of plaster casts, splints and support bandages.
- Assist in the initial assessment of undiagnosed patients by taking recordings of their vital signs as directed by nursing staff, including neuro obs, blood glucose monitoring and urinalysis.
- Recognise changes in the patients observations and report accordingly.
- To assist patients with toileting needs e.g. escort to toilet.
- To assist trained staff to transfer patients e.g. from trolley to ambulance stretcher.
- To make verbal reports to nursing staff concerning patients well-being and behaviours.
- To undertake further training to extend skills e.g. Blood glucose monitoring, Venepuncture & Cannulation, recording ECGs as directed by qualified nursing staff.
- To undertake D-dimer blood tests as directed by nursing staff.
- To act as a chaperone.
- To assist team in emergency management of patients e.g. performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Clerical Duties
- To accurately input patient data.
- To be competent, after training, on various hospital & national computer systems.
- Maintaining accurate electronic & paper patient records.
- Dealing professionally with telephone enquires both internal & external.
- To maintain a high level of patient confidentiality.
Health Care Assistant Duties
Areas Of Responsibility:
- Check vaccine refrigerators daily and record temperature.
- Unlock store rooms and cupboards. Ensure all equipment is set up for the day.
- To ensure that there are sufficient patient information and advice leaflets and liaise appropriately
- Filing of patient information and entering results of Blood Pressures, Urinalysis etc onto the Computer.
- Re-stock and check Clinical rooms twice weekly and as needed.
- Keep all cupboards and trolleys well stocked and tidy.
- Be familiar with UTC protocols and take part in their regular updating.
- Unpacking deliveries.
- Liaise with UTC staff
Clinical Care
- Work alongside the clinicians in the provision of patient care.
- Undertake and record a range of tasks, which may include:
- Measurement of height and weight
- Urinalysis
- Measurement of blood pressure, temperature and pulse
- Peak flow measurements
- Recording of ECGs
- Venepuncture
- Spirometry
- Simple dressings
- Simple wound care
- Recognise changes in the patients observations, which must be reported and acted on.
- Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients.
- Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team.
- Act as a chaperone.
- Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients.
GENERAL DUTIES
