UX Researcher – Contract
Location: Birmingham or London – Birmingham preferred
Contract: 6 months
Start: ASAP
Day Rate: Flexible / dependent on experience
We are looking for an experienced UX Researcher to join a major transformation programme focused on redesigning and modernising complex customer, professional development and qualification journeys.
Working as part of a cross-functional Experience & Operations team, you will embed high-quality user research into fast-paced design sprints, ensuring that product, service and system-level decisions are grounded in robust user and stakeholder evidence.
This is an opportunity to work across a complex service environment involving multiple user groups, processes and journeys, rather than focusing solely on individual digital interfaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Embed UX research within cross-functional, sprint-led delivery teams.
- Partner with Product Managers, Service Designers, Business Analysts and subject matter experts to define clear research questions.
- Plan and deliver mixed-method research across discovery, concept evaluation and validation.
- Conduct research that informs wider service and system design, including user journeys, service blueprints and experience principles.
- Represent the voice of users and stakeholders throughout sprint ceremonies and design discussions.
- Synthesise qualitative and quantitative findings into clear, actionable insights.
- Translate research evidence into narratives that support prioritisation, trade-offs and design decisions.
- Support benchmarking and experience measurement activities.
- Work across multiple programme workstreams to ensure consistency and effective reuse of research insights.
- Advise colleagues on appropriate research approaches and good practice.
- Use AI-enabled tools appropriately to support research synthesis and analysis while maintaining research quality and rigour.

Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience delivering UX, User or Service Research within complex organisations or transformation programmes.
- Strong experience working within Agile, sprint-led and cross-functional environments.
- Strong qualitative research capability, supported by quantitative data and analytics where appropriate.
- Experience selecting and adapting research methods across discovery, exploration, concept testing and validation.
- Comfortable researching complex systems, services and user journeys, rather than solely digital interfaces.
- Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into structured research plans and clear, decision-focused insights.
- Experience working alongside Product Managers, Service Designers, Business Analysts and technical teams.
- Experience contributing to service design artefacts such as journey maps, service blueprints and experience principles.
- Understanding of ethical research practices, GDPR and inclusive research design.
- Experience with research and insight platforms such as UserTesting, Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, Adobe Analytics or equivalent.
- Experience within regulated, high-assurance, content-heavy or similarly complex environments would be advantageous.

This is an initial 6-month contract with an ASAP start. The role can be based from Birmingham or London, with Birmingham preferred.
