The Opportunity

An established specialist tax practice is looking for an Assistant Tax Manager to join its growing international tax team. This is a specialist role focused on US and UK taxation for American expatriates and internationally mobile individuals, combining tax compliance, cross-border tax advisory, client management and team supervision. The role would suit someone currently working in US Tax, Expatriate Tax, International Individual Tax, Private Client Tax or Cross-Border Tax who wants to develop their technical knowledge and take greater ownership of client relationships and junior team members. You will work across both US and UK tax matters, giving you exposure to a broad range of international individual tax issues.

Key Responsibilities

US & UK Tax Compliance

  • Prepare and review US and UK individual tax returns for expatriates and internationally mobile individuals.
  • Work across US Forms 1040, Form 8938, FBARs, UK Self-Assessment and other international tax filings.
  • Manage tax return deadlines, estimates, extensions and other compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Assist with delinquent and voluntary disclosure filings, including Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures (SFOP), Streamlined Domestic Offshore Procedures (SDOP), Delinquent FBAR procedures and related submissions.
  • Prepare responses and supporting documentation for IRS, HMRC and other tax authority enquiries.
  • Review work completed by more junior members of the team.

International & Cross-Border Tax Advisory

  • Research and advise on US/UK cross-border tax issues affecting individuals and families.
  • Support senior team members with technical research, client consultations and prospective client work.
  • Advise on tax-efficient structures, investments and the interaction between US and UK tax systems.
  • Prepare technical tax memos and written advice on a range of international tax matters.
  • Advise on UK residence and the Statutory Residence Test (SRT).
  • Develop knowledge of the interaction between US tax rules, UK taxation and the US/UK tax treaty.
  • Where relevant, gain exposure to US taxation of foreign companies, including Form 5471, GILTI and Form 8832 elections.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
