Workdays & Hours

Field Operations is a 24/7 Operation - weekend work may be required. This position is a first responder in severe weather conditions/emergencies which will be subject to work after hours, emergency call back hours, nights, weekends, holidays and will participate in an on-call rotation schedule. This role requires proactive and dependable individuals who can quickly adapt to changing conditions and respond efficiently to urgent situations. Ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems, maintaining the success of our operations team and the satisfaction of our customers during critical times.

Job Overview

A Utility Line Technician position is available with the City of Fort Worth Water Department / Field Operations Division Locates/Water Quality section. The Field Operations Division is a 24/7 operation and is the largest division of the Water Department and an integral function of the maintenance of the City of Fort Worth’s infrastructure. This position is essential to the daily operations of the division and an integral role in the department's success. The ideal candidate will be responsible for responding to 811 utility locate tickets, communicating effectively with contractors, customers, and internal stakeholders; accurately locating and marking underground water and wastewater infrastructure; and interpreting utility records, including GIS data, engineering drawings, as-built plans, and other utility documentation. Responsibilities include conducting utility damage investigations, maintaining accurate records and documentation, and operating specialized utility locating equipment to ensure the protection of critical underground infrastructure.

In addition, the position will perform a variety of water quality-related duties, including investigating customer water quality concerns such as low chlorine residuals, taste and odor complaints, cloudy or discolored water, and other distribution system issues. The successful candidate will conduct routine and corrective flushing of water mains to maintain water quality, operate and optimize automatic flushing devices, evaluate water quality data to adjust flushing schedules, and ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and utility operating procedures.

Job Summary

Looking for a hands-on job that keeps your city flowing? Fort Worth Water is hiring Utility Line Technicians – Water Distribution Systems to help maintain and repair critical infrastructure beneath our streets.

You’ll operate advanced inspection tools, perform smoke testing, monitor sewer flow, and respond to service calls that keep Fort Worth’s wastewater collection system working safely and efficiently. This role is outdoors, physical, and essential—and it comes with opportunities to grow your skills and build a long-term career in public service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED certification
  • Two (2) years of water/sewer utilities experience
  • Possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a TCEQ Water Distribution D license is required within twelve months of hire. To obtain this license, you must be able to pass a written test and criminal background check
  • Must be able to pass a physical and drug screen testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of work order management software
  • Possess a TCEQ Water Distribution C license or higher
  • Previous experience working with a large water utility
  • Possess a Class A CDL
  • PACP, LACP, and MACP certified

Utility Line Technician Responsibilities

As a Utility Line Technician, you’ll be part of a team dedicated to maintaining and repairing our city’s vital water and sewer systems. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and Repairing Water and Sewer Systems: You’ll be on the front lines ensuring our water and sewer systems are running smoothly, conducting everything from routine maintenance to more complex repairs
  • CCTV Video Assessments: Using state-of-the-art technology, you’ll conduct detailed inspections of the wastewater collection system to identify issues and keep everything flowing properly
  • Smoke Testing & Inspections: Play a key role in identifying system issues through smoke testing and manhole inspections—critical tasks that help prevent future problems and keep our systems working efficiently
  • Flow Monitoring & Equipment Maintenance: Install, monitor, and maintain flow monitoring equipment, providing essential data to help us improve our systems and track performance
  • Customer Support & Troubleshooting: You’ll be the go-to person for solving problems and answering questions from residents, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Hands-on, Physical Work: This job involves manual labor—whether it’s installing new systems, repairing pipes, or maintaining infrastructure, you’ll be doing meaningful work that directly impacts the community
  • Reporting & Documentation: Stay on top of important paperwork by completing city-specific forms, surveys, and reports, ensuring we maintain the highest standards of operation
