Utility Maintenance Worker

Position Function Summary:

The Water/Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This role supports the delivery of safe drinking water and the proper treatment and disposal of wastewater, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and public health standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs the city’s water distribution and wastewater collection system, including pipes, hydrants, valves, meters, and manholes.
  • Reads meters and replaces old and/or defective meters.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and supplies.
  • Perform routine system maintenance such as flushing hydrants, cleaning sewer lines, and inspecting infrastructure
  • Operate and maintain pumps, tools, and related equipment
  • Monitor system performance and identify leaks, blockages, or system failures
  • Respond to service calls, main breaks, sewer backups, and emergency situations
  • Assist with water quality sampling and wastewater monitoring as required
  • Read and interpret maps, blueprints, and GIS data for underground utilities
  • Conduct confined space entry for inspection and maintenance of manholes and lift stations (following safety protocols)
  • Assist with excavation, trenching, pipe installation, and site restoration
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and regulatory documentation
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., environmental and safety standards)
  • Follow all safety procedures, including use of PPE and hazard mitigation practices

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas State driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
  • Class D Water & Class D Wastewater License required. Or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.

Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

  • Skills in manual labor.
  • Skills in equipment, ground, and building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations when using small engines and light machinery.
  • Knowledge of proper maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and hand tools.
  • Skills in mechanical operations.
  • Skills in concrete repair and construction.
  • Skills in the use of a personal computer.
  • Ability to read water meters.
  • Ability to carry out handwritten and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate City equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to inspect new construction for quality and workmanship.
  • Knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and system issues
  • Strong attention to safety, especially in confined spaces and hazardous environments
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to read maps, system diagrams, and work orders
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and system tracking
