I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in product design, particularly within early-stage or foundational product development. You should have experience as a Principal Product Designer, Design Lead, or similar leadership role, with a proven track record of leading 0-to-1 initiatives. Expertise in financial or accounting-related products—such as accounting, bookkeeping, or payments—is highly desirable. You should have a solid understanding of the accounting process, general ledger management, and industry best practices, either through professional qualifications or entrepreneurial experience. Proficiency in prototyping tools such as Figma, and familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, is essential. Strong product judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with engineers and product managers are also critical for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end design of a meaningful product area, from problem discovery through to user adoption and success metrics.
- Develop a deep understanding of customer needs and underlying pain points through research and direct engagement.
- Identify and frame the core problems worth solving, rather than simply responding to assigned tasks.
- Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams to shape product strategy and ensure design decisions support business goals.
- Create prototypes and test experiences rapidly to validate ideas and gather user feedback.
- Engage directly with customers throughout discovery and delivery phases to ensure solutions meet real needs.
- Utilize qualitative and quantitative data to inform and refine design choices.
- Launch new features, measure their impact, and iteratively improve based on user feedback and analytics.
- Make thoughtful trade-offs in ambiguous environments, adapting strategies as new evidence emerges.
- Take ownership of outcomes, ensuring that design efforts translate into measurable business value.
