About Us
We offer a sensitive, professional service to the families in our care and are proud to be part of the Funeral Partners family. Together, we are leading the way in setting new standards of excellence within the profession.
Our people are key to our success, they bring a wealth of experience from both inside and outside the Funeral industry and, as an organisation, we really know what it means to work as a team. But, don’t take our word for it, see what our people say about working for Funeral Partners.
The Opportunity
Based at Gibson’s Funeral Services - Bishop Auckland, our Funeral Service Operatives are calm, professional and play a vital role in our service. They are often the first members of the team to meet our families. A good Funeral Service Operative will be able to provide reassurance to families that we will take good care of their loved ones whilst we prepare them for their final journey.
In addition to bringing people's loved ones into our care, Funeral Service Operatives play an active role behind the scenes, working in the mortuary, fitting coffins, and dressing the deceased; as well as participating in funeral services, pallbearing, and helping to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Your duties will include driving company vehicles, so you'll need a full driving licence. You'll also have a place on the out of hours, and on-call rota, which will provide an opportunity to earn additional payments.
Being a Funeral Service Operative can be challenging and rewarding, and no two days are quite the same, within this role you will also be trained as a Funeral Director to support the business needs. To learn more about this important role, go to our Careers page.
Previous experience within the funeral industry is desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from experienced Funeral Directors and Funeral Service Operatives, as well as individuals from other sectors who possess strong customer service skills, compassion, professionalism, and a genuine desire to support others.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
