Job Description

SAGA Truck & Van is the leading Mercedes-Benz distributor in the United Kingdom, with a network of ten dealerships across Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, and East England, employing over five hundred staff.

The SAGA Mercedes-Benz Story

The journey began in 1971 in western France, initially focused solely on commercial vehicles. Over the years, car and utility vehicle operations were added, and dealerships multiplied—first regionally until 2013, then nationally, before expanding internationally in 2019. In 2024, SAGA Mercedes-Benz expanded to England with the acquisition of 10 dealerships, previously owned by Sparshatt Truck and Van and Motus Truck & Van. Today, SAGA has an international presence (in France, Belgium, England, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the Czech Republic) and represents 70% of the RCM group’s revenue.

Key Responsibilities

As Director of Van Sales, you will provide strategic leadership for the regional Van business, owning the end-to-end commercial performance of Mercedes-Benz Van sales. You will set the vision, define and execute growth strategies, and lead a team to deliver sustainable revenue, market share expansion, and long-term customer value. You will already have strong relationships with large fleet customers and have the ability to develop and coach the Van team on both New & used including administrative team.

Strategic Sales Leadership

  • Define and execute a UK-wide strategy to drive market share growth, revenue expansion, and profitability across the Mercedes-Benz van portfolio.
  • Translate manufacturer and corporate objectives into clear, actionable commercial plans with measurable outcomes.
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing sales teams, embedding a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Act as a senior commercial voice within the business, influencing broader strategic direction and investment decisions.

Retail Sales Strategy New & Used Van

  • Develop and implement strategies to maximise retail vehicle sales, finance penetration, accessory sales, and customer retention across the retail customer base.
  • Ensure exceptional customer engagement throughout the sales journey, delivering a premium Mercedes-Benz customer experience.
  • Drive showroom and digital sales performance through effective lead management, conversion strategies, and customer relationship management.
  • Monitor retail market trends, competitor activity, and consumer behaviour to identify opportunities for growth and market share expansion.
  • Work closely with Marketing to optimise campaigns, lead generation, and brand awareness initiatives that support retail sales objectives.

Key Account & Client Strategy

  • Establish, own, and develop strategic relationships with major fleet clients, positioning the business as a long-term partner of choice.
  • Lead engagement on complex, high-value opportunities, ensuring commercially robust and sustainable outcomes.
  • Oversee the development of tailored, consultative solutions that align with client operational needs and long-term fleet strategies.
  • Strengthen client retention and lifetime value through proactive account management and executive-level engagement.

Commercial & Marketing Excellence & Market Leadership

  • Establish the function as a centre of excellence for both retail and commercial vehicle sales new and used through deep market insight and competitive positioning.
  • Contribute and influence marketing strategies and activities to leverage businesses.
  • Leverage data, industry trends, and customer intelligence to identify new growth opportunities and optimise market approach across retail and fleet channels.
  • Champion product expertise, sales excellence, and thought leadership across the team, ensuring strong differentiation in a competitive marketplace.
  • Support and encourage CRM tool development and roll out. Ensure implementation and use of CRM across sales teams.

Revenue Delivery & Pipeline Governance

  • Maintain executive oversight of the full retail and fleet sales pipeline, ensuring robust forecasting, conversion, volume achievement, and margin optimisation.
  • Drive a disciplined, consultative sales methodology across all sales channels, focused on value creation, customer satisfaction, and long-term partnerships.
  • Lead the negotiation and closure of strategically significant fleet opportunities while ensuring consistent retail sales performance against agreed targets.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Operational Alignment

  • Lead the Van Sales, Sales Administration, in coordination with Finance, Service functions, ensuring alignment across all departments to deliver a seamless, end-to-end customer journey.
  • Ensure operational scalability and efficiency across all sales processes, from order through to delivery and aftersales.
  • Champion compliance, governance, and brand standards in line with FCA and Mercedes-Benz requirements.
  • Lead and develop cross-functional teams including Retail Sales, Sales Administration, and work in close collaboration with Finance, Marketing, Aftersales, and Service to deliver a seamless, end-to-end customer journey.
  • Ensure operational scalability, efficiency, and continuous improvement across all sales processes, from enquiry and order management through to vehicle delivery and aftersales support.
  • Drive collaboration across all customer-facing functions to maximise customer satisfaction, operational performance, and commercial results.
  • Champion compliance, governance, and brand standards, ensuring all sales operations adhere to FCA regulations, Mercedes-Benz requirements, and internal policies.

Performance Management & Insight

  • Own sales performance reporting across retail and fleet operations, providing clear insight, forecasting, and strategic recommendations to executive stakeholders and manufacturer partners.
  • Utilise data-driven analysis to identify risks, unlock opportunities, and drive continuous performance improvement.
  • Monitor key performance indicators including retail volume, fleet volume, market share, profitability, finance penetration, customer satisfaction, and sales team performance.

Personal Contribution & Strategic Accounts

  • Retain executive ownership of a select portfolio of key strategic fleet accounts, ensuring long-term revenue stability and growth.
  • Support key retail customer relationships and high-profile opportunities where executive engagement adds commercial value.
  • Contribute directly to overall revenue delivery through leadership of flagship deals, strategic customer relationships, and sales performance across both retail and fleet channels.

  • Deep industry expertise within the van and commercial vehicle sector, with particular strength in large-volume, multi-site operational environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing and expanding relationships with major fleet customers, driving long-term commercial growth and strategic partnerships.
  • Strong governance mindset with a comprehensive understanding of FCA regulations and premium brand compliance frameworks, including Mercedes-Benz standards.
  • Extensive experience leading all aspects of departmental operations within commercial vehicle environments, ideally within premium or high-profile automotive brands.
  • Highly effective in navigating and influencing complex organisational structures, both internally and across customer ecosystems.
