Overview
West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of over 2.9 million people.
Our vision is ‘Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier’.
This vision and the strategic goals outlined in ‘Our Strategy’ are what drives the people, professionalism and pride with which we serve our communities.
Due to colleagues taking up temporary promotion opportunities and periods of family leave, we have several exciting opportunities to join our Prevention Delivery team.
These Upper Foundation level positions are an excellent entry point into a career with West Midlands Fire Service, offering the chance to make a real difference in local communities while developing valuable skills and experience. Full training will be provided, with opportunities for further development and progression as future vacancies arise.
Prevention Officer
Provide targeted support, education and intervention to adults, children and young people who may be vulnerable to fire-related risks. Working alongside partner agencies, you will manage a caseload, deliver person-centred support, and help improve safety, health and wellbeing outcomes across West Midlands communities.
Safeside Support Officer
Play a key role in the day-to-day operation of Safeside, our immersive safety education centre. You will support programme delivery, visitor experiences, bookings, administration, facilities coordination and performance monitoring to ensure high-quality learning experiences for thousands of visitors each year.
Volunteer Support Officer
Support and develop our volunteer workforce, ensuring volunteers are recruited, trained, deployed and recognised effectively. You will help coordinate volunteering activity, maintain records and systems, and work with communities and partners to grow volunteering opportunities across Prevention programmes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
