Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Frimley Health Intravenous and Vascular Access Services (IVAS) team, based at Frimley Park Hospital, with regular working at Wexham Park Hospital. The ability to drive is essential.
As a Vascular Access Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), you will provide a comprehensive, patient-centred vascular access service across Frimley Health, including a reactive PICC insertion and difficult IV access service, 7 days a week, 8am–8pm. You will provide expert ward-based training and support in the care and maintenance of vascular access devices, ensuring high standards of clinical practice across the organisation.
The post holder will also manage and support the Vascular Access Technician team, promoting safe, effective and evidence-based practice.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and motivated Band 6 nurse, who may be considered for a Band 7 development pathway. Full vascular access training will be provided, making this an ideal opportunity to develop specialist skills and progress your career within a supportive multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
- Work as part of the IVAS team, taking direction from the IVAS Matron and Nurse Consultant, and work flexibly across sites.
- Provide expert care and maintenance of mid- to long-term central venous access devices and deliver high standards of vascular access and IV therapy.
- Line manage, support and develop the Vascular Access Technician team, while embracing new skills, techniques and protocols as required.
- Assess, manage and follow up vascular access and IV therapy complications, including thrombosis, infection and medical adhesive-related skin injury.
- Perform PICC and midline insertion, venepuncture, cannulation, IV therapy and ultrasound-guided difficult IV access; review chest X-rays for catheter tip confirmation.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and provide safe, effective, patient-centred care for individuals requiring vascular access.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC Registered 1st level Nurse
- Teaching, assessing and mentorship qualification with experience in teaching individuals from a range of disciplines including nursing, medicine
- Willing to undertake BS/ MSc in Nursing studies
Desirable criteria
- MSC Advanced Practice
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial clinical experience at Band 6 or Band 7
- Experience of audit/data collection
- Experience of working with IV therapy and vascular access in some form
Desirable criteria
- Previously or currently presented information to national meetings
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent interpersonal skills and time management
- Clinical skills to include: Vascular Access, Venepuncture and Cannulation
- All aspects of IV therapy administration - Midlines Insertion
- PICC Line Insertion
- Computer Literacy skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office package including Word, Publisher, Excel and PowerPoint

- Previously or currently presented information to national meetings
