The Role
We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Clinical Research Fellow (MD) in Vascular Surgery to join the Newcastle Vascular Research Group within the School of Medicine, Newcastle University.
You will join a thriving and internationally recognised academic vascular surgery team based at the Freeman Hospital and Newcastle University. The group is led by Mr Sandip Nandhra, NIHR Advanced Fellow and Honorary Consultant Vascular Surgeon, and delivers a portfolio of nationally funded clinical trials and observational studies in vascular disease.
You will contribute to a programme of research investigating acute limb ischaemia (ALI), chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI), peripheral arterial disease and outcomes following lower limb revascularisation. There will be specific elements of this role related to national audit programs and quality improvement initiatives around ALI.
The post offers an excellent opportunity to undertake research towards an MD degree while gaining experience in clinical trials, registry studies and translational vascular research.
You will work alongside an established multidisciplinary team comprising consultant vascular surgeons, clinical trialists, statisticians, research nurses and doctoral researchers. The research programme includes NIHR-funded studies and collaborations with national and international vascular research networks.
The Clinical Research Fellow (MD) in Vascular Surgery will support a programme of research investigating acute and chronic lower limb vascular disease, including acute limb ischaemia, chronic limb-threatening ischaemia, peripheral arterial disease and lower limb revascularisation outcomes.
You will undertake research towards an MD degree whilst supporting the delivery of NIHR-funded clinical trials and observational research studies. The post holder will contribute to participant recruitment and follow-up, clinical data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation and dissemination of research findings.
The role provides an outstanding opportunity to develop expertise in clinical research methodology, trial delivery and academic vascular surgery within a highly supportive research environment.

Key Accountabilities
- Co-ordinate own work with that of others, deal with problems which may affect the achievement of research objectives and contribute to the planning of the project
- Work with the Newcastle Vascular Research team, co-lead the research meetings and organise research department updates
- Lead and co-lead on NIHR national recruitment alongside own research project
- Present information on research progress and outcomes to the Principal Investigator and colleagues overseeing the research project, and at national and international meetings (VSGBI, PVSS etc.)
- Write up results from own research activity and provide input into the research project’s dissemination, in whatever form
- Work to deadlines and manage competing priorities
- Ensure that personal knowledge and training in relevant fields of study is kept up to date
- Work with other researchers in a team and actively participate in collaborative research, liaising with research colleagues and support staff on day-to-day issues – specifically with project managers and research group lead/s
- Provide guidance as required to any support staff and/or research students
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable experience in vascular surgery research
- Experience in acute limb ischaemia, chronic limb-threatening ischaemia, peripheral arterial disease or lower limb outcomes research
- Evidence of research outputs including presentations and publications
- Experience working with clinical datasets and research databases
- Understanding of clinical research methodology
- Ability to analyse and interpret clinical data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
Desirable
- Previous higher degree research experience
- Good Clinical Practice certification
- Experience in clinical trials
- Experience using registry or routinely collected healthcare datasets
- Statistical analysis experience using Stata, R or SPSS
- Authorship of peer-reviewed publications in vascular surgery
- Experience preparing research funding applications

Qualifications
- Primary medical qualification (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- National Training Number (NTN) in Vascular Surgery or equivalent recognised vascular training programme

- Previous higher degree (MRes, MSc or equivalent)
- Good Clinical Practice certification
