VASP Financial Crime & Blockchain Analytics Specialist

Fractional/part-time consultancy or full-time

Role overview

We are seeking an experienced financial crime professional to support the development and operation of a bank’s Virtual Asset Service Provider proposition.

The individual will bring practical experience of financial crime risk within cryptocurrency or digital assets, together with hands-on knowledge of blockchain analytics tools. They will help establish an appropriate control framework and support the assessment, monitoring and investigation of VASP customers and cryptocurrency-related activity.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise on the financial crime risks associated with VASPs, cryptoassets and blockchain-based transactions.
  • Support the design or enhancement of the VASP financial crime framework, including policies, risk appetite, controls and operating procedures.
  • Conduct or oversee due diligence and enhanced due diligence on VASPs, crypto businesses and related customers.
  • Assess customer business models, ownership structures, jurisdictions, products, transaction flows and exposure to higher-risk activity.
  • Use blockchain analytics tools to trace transactions, identify wallet exposure and investigate suspicious activity.
  • Develop blockchain monitoring rules, alert scenarios, escalation criteria and investigation procedures.
  • Review exposure to sanctions, fraud, scams, darknet markets, mixers, privacy-enhancing services and other illicit activity.
  • Support transaction monitoring investigations, suspicious activity reporting and regulatory or law-enforcement enquiries.
  • Provide practical guidance and training to compliance, onboarding and investigations teams.
  • Work with commercial, risk, technology and product teams to ensure controls are proportionate and workable.

Required experience

  • Strong financial crime experience within banking, payments, fintech, cryptocurrency or a regulated VASP.
  • Direct experience assessing or monitoring VASPs and cryptocurrency-related activity.
  • Hands-on experience with blockchain analytics platforms such as Chainalysis, Elliptic or TRM Labs.
  • Good knowledge of AML, CTF, sanctions, KYC, KYB, EDD and transaction monitoring.
  • Experience investigating blockchain transactions and interpreting wallet risk and exposure.
  • Understanding of UK regulatory expectations relating to cryptoassets and financial crime.
  • Ability to explain complex blockchain findings clearly to senior, commercial and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable experience

  • Experience developing or implementing a VASP or crypto banking control framework.
  • Previous work within a UK-regulated bank, EMI, payments provider or cryptoasset firm.
  • Experience supporting regulatory applications, remediation programmes or control reviews.
  • Relevant qualifications such as CAMS, ICA, CFCS or recognised blockchain analytics certification.
  • Knowledge of Travel Rule requirements and cross-border crypto regulation.
