VAT Manager
London | US Law Firm | Hybrid
A prestigious US law firm is seeking an experienced VAT Manager to join its expanding Tax Operations team. The role will take ownership of the firm’s day-to-day VAT and indirect tax compliance activities across multiple jurisdictions.
This is a hands-on management position with responsibility for multi-jurisdictional VAT compliance, external advisor relationships, and the support of a VAT Analyst. The successful candidate will also play an important role in improving processes, controls, and technology as the firm continues to develop its international indirect tax function.
Key Responsibilities
- VAT compliance: Manage the preparation, review, and submission of VAT/GST returns across multiple international jurisdictions.
- Indirect tax reporting: Oversee European Sales Listings, Intrastat filings, and other periodic indirect tax reporting requirements.
- Compliance management: Own the VAT compliance calendar, ensuring all filing deadlines, documentation, and regulatory requirements are met.
- Technical oversight: Monitor VAT developments, assess their operational impact, and provide practical guidance to Finance, Billing, and Accounts Payable teams.
- VAT registrations: Support VAT registrations, deregistrations, and changes to existing registrations as the firm’s international requirements develop.
- Advisor management: Manage relationships with external VAT advisors, coordinating filings, information requests, and outstanding technical matters.
- Audit support: Lead responses to tax authority enquiries, VAT audits, and wider compliance reviews.
- Team management: Lead, mentor, and develop the VAT Analyst, overseeing workload, technical development, and the quality of deliverables.
- Process improvement: Identify opportunities to improve VAT processes, controls, data quality, and filing efficiency.
- Tax technology: Support e-invoicing, real-time reporting, automation, and wider tax technology initiatives.
- International tax operations: Assist with withholding tax documentation, tax residency certificates, and related tax operational activities where required.

- Extensive VAT or indirect tax compliance experience, ideally gained within a multinational, professional services, or law firm environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of VAT/GST returns, European Sales Listings, Intrastat, and VAT registrations.
- Experience managing multi-jurisdictional VAT compliance and external advisor relationships.
- Previous exposure to VAT audits, tax authority enquiries, and compliance reviews.
- Interest in e-invoicing, tax technology, automation, and process improvement.
- ATT, CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent qualification, or progress towards qualification, is preferred.
