Pay Rate: £18.85 per hour
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm

We're currently recruiting an experienced Vehicle Technician to join the Fleet Services team supporting the City of Wolverhampton Council. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a diverse fleet of vehicles and specialist equipment that play a vital role in keeping local services running efficiently.
You'll be responsible for servicing, maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and plant machinery, ensuring they remain safe, reliable and roadworthy.
Vehicles and Equipment You'll Work On
- Refuse collection vehicles (bin wagons)
- Road sweepers
- Grounds maintenance equipment and mowers
- Buses
- Commercial vehicles
- Heavy plant and specialist Council equipment
The Role
As a Vehicle Technician, you will carry out inspections, servicing, diagnostics and repairs across the Council's fleet and associated equipment. Working to industry standards and DVSA requirements, you'll play a key role in maintaining operational readiness and vehicle safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, service and repair commercial vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Carry out routine maintenance, safety inspections and roadworthiness checks.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, transmission, fuel and hydraulic system faults.
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with Operator Licence requirements and DVSA standards.
- Respond to breakdowns and undertake roadside or on-site repairs when required.
- Support vehicle recovery operations in a safe and professional manner.
- Complete service records, inspection reports and job documentation accurately.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, customers and specialist contractors.
- Assist with refurbishment and maintenance of specialist lifting equipment in line with LOLER regulations.
- Support apprentices and less experienced team members where required.
- Work independently and use initiative to prioritise workloads effectively.

About You
We're looking for a skilled mechanic who enjoys working on a varied fleet and takes pride in delivering high-quality repair and maintenance work.
Essential Requirements
- City & Guilds Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
- Previous experience as a Vehicle Technician.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
- Experience repairing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Good all-round knowledge of commercial vehicles and plant equipment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible and proactive approach to work.
- Commitment to health and safety standards.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- City & Guilds Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
- Experience working on LGV/HGV vehicles.
- D1 and/or C1 driving licence.
- MOT Class 4 & 7 qualification.
- Cat C licence.
- Euro 6 engine training.
- Welding certification.
- Safe Use of Gas certification.
- Dennis Eagle vehicle training.
- Terberg lift training.

Additional Information
This position includes participation in an out-of-hours rota to support essential services, including:
- Winter gritting fleet standby cover.
- Workshop support on bank holidays when refuse collection services are operating.
- Breakdown response and emergency repair work when required.
