London | Full-time contract, 6 months, with a route to permanent
About our client
Our client is a UK public R&D funding agency backing high-risk, high-reward research at the edge of what is possible. Its programmes span frontier areas including AI and compute, robotics, neurotechnology, synthetic biology, climate and advanced manufacturing, funding world-class scientists and engineers to pursue breakthroughs that could transform industries.
Breakthroughs only matter if they reach the world. That is the job of a newly created Translation function: turning frontier R&D into companies, products, partnerships and real-world impact.
The role
This is a founding role in a brand-new function. You will work directly with the executive leading Translation to build how the organisation supports its programmes to move from breakthrough to impact, and to make that support repeatable across the whole portfolio.
It is an initial six-month consultancy with the potential to extend. For someone exceptional, it is a strong route into a permanent role as the function grows.
What you'll do in your first six months
- Build translation capacity around programmes
- Find and bring in the right experts, entrepreneurs, funders and industry partners to help research teams take their next step.
- Launch a practical translation toolkit
- Turn what's being learned across the portfolio into clear, usable guidance for programme leaders. Less theory, more "here's what works".
- Systematise how the organisation engages capital and industry
- Design and run a structured approach to engaging investors, next-stage funders, founders and corporates around its programmes.
- Build AI-enabled workflows
- Develop tools and processes that use AI to identify talent, specialist experts, companies and potential funders at speed and at scale.

What you'll bring
- A track record at the intersection of science, technology, capital and entrepreneurship. You might come from venture capital, venture building, a tech transfer office, deep tech BD, corporate venturing, a startup, or strategy consulting to frontier tech.
- A strong network, or the ability to build one fast, across investors, founders, industry and technical experts.
- Real comfort working with senior people: founders, investors, scientists and executives.
- The instinct to connect dots across technology, markets and funding that others see separately.
- Hands-on fluency with AI tools, and ideas about how to use them to do work that used to take weeks.
- A builder's mindset. You are energised by ambiguity, happy to create structure from nothing, and you ship.

Nice to have
- Experience in one or more of: AI, compute, robotics, climate, neurotech, synthetic biology, advanced manufacturing.
- Experience of spinning out, founding or scaling a company.
- Experience working with or inside public funding bodies or research organisations.
