Vessel Engineer
Location: Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8AJ Salary: Competitive salary plus excellent benefits Schedule: Perm/FT – 6 weeks on, 3 weeks off rota
For applicants living beyond 80 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco will cover travel costs at 0.45p per mile (return).
About the Role
Ready to make a meaningful impact? As a Vessel Engineer in Serco Maritime Services, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of critical onboard systems. Working on the Raasay Ranges at BUTECH, you’ll support maritime missions that contribute to national and global capability—delivering trusted, high-standard services.
Your expertise will ensure vessels operate safely, efficiently, and reliably, supporting missions that make a positive difference.
What You’ll Do
You’ll take ownership of:
- Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical systems, and equipment
- Collaborating with the Master to optimise performance, efficiency, and reliability of all machinery
- Overseeing planned maintenance, emergency repairs, and contractor work to maintain vessel readiness
- Monitoring fuel, lubricants, and water usage, while keeping daily records accurate
- Supervising bunkering operations and managing fuel, ballast, and water transfers
- Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and pollution prevention regulations
- Maintaining detailed records, inventories, and reports per company requirements
- Supporting safe operations by being on standby during critical manoeuvres and port activities

Requirements
This role will suit you if you have:
- Certificate of Competence as a Second Marine Engineer Officer (SMEO) or above
- Valid STCW certification, including safety, firefighting, and survival training
- Unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate and current passport
- Ability to obtain a Security Clearance (SC)
- A methodical, organised approach with strong attention to detail
