Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and caring Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA) to join our busy 24-hour veterinary hospital.
This is a hands-on and varied role, working closely alongside our experienced veterinary nurses to provide high standards of care to our hospitalised patients. It would suit someone with a keen interest in the veterinary industry, who is enthusiastic, hardworking and keen to learn and develop their skills within a busy hospital environment.
The Role
Working as part of the hospital team, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing high standards of animal husbandry and patient care
- Checking and caring for hospitalised patients throughout their stay
- Cleaning and preparing patient beds and kennels
- Feeding and grooming patients according to their individual needs
- Walking patients and providing appropriate enrichment and comfort
- Assisting the nursing team with medication and patient care
- Supporting nurses with the general monitoring and care of hospitalised patients
- Assisting with theatre preparation and set-up
- Cleaning and maintaining theatre and clinical areas
- Stocking up clinical areas and ensuring equipment and supplies are readily available
- Helping to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation throughout the hospital
- Supporting the wider veterinary team wherever required

About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Enthusiastic and genuinely interested in working within the veterinary industry
- Caring and compassionate, with a strong commitment to animal welfare
- Keen to learn and develop their knowledge and practical skills
- Reliable, hardworking and able to work well as part of a team
- Comfortable working in a busy 24-hour hospital environment
- Organised and able to work efficiently while maintaining a high standard of patient care
- Happy to get involved in all aspects of hospital life, including cleaning and general housekeeping
- A good communicator who is willing to ask questions and learn from our experienced nursing and veterinary teams

About You
You’re skilled at providing exceptional client care and are passionate about caring for pets. You’re a team player who wants to make a real difference in a practice that values and supports you.
We welcome applications from candidates able to prioritise, remain calm under pressure and who are flexible and willing to learn.
This role is not suitable for young workers in line with Health and Safety Executive (government) direction due to the expected duties of the role. Therefore, you will be asked to confirm that you are over the age of 18 as part of the application process.
What you’ll be doing
Typically, in this role, you’ll:
- Deliver exceptional care to clients, supporting surgeries and procedures, complying with all regulatory, practice and operational standards
- Deliver patient monitoring and care to pets, including walking, toileting and feeding
- Work collaboratively within a supportive team
