Vets for Pets and Companion Care are part of The Pets at Home Vet Group, within the wider Pets at Home Group plc, the UK’s leading pet care business. Role Description
This full-time, on-site Veterinary Surgeon role is based in Derby within the Vets for Pets network. The practice is privately owned as part of a Vets for Pets JVP.

The Veterinary Surgeon will provide high-quality medical and surgical care to small animals, including conducting consultations, diagnosing conditions, performing routine and complex surgeries, and delivering follow-up care.

Daily responsibilities include interpreting diagnostic tests, managing treatment plans, maintaining accurate clinical records, and communicating clearly and compassionately with clients about their pets’ health and preventive care.
The role also involves working collaboratively with our team of fantastic veterinary nurses and support colleagues, contributing to practice clinical standards, and participating in rota-based duties such as weekends and bank holidays. There are no OOH duties as OOH cover is provided by a local referral practice. New and recent graduates are welcome in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Each operating vet has a dedicated surgery day each week, and all vets benefit from a 4 day week, with an additional day's leave in lieu of weekend duties.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong skills in medicine and surgery, including experience with common small animal procedures and case management.
- Candidates should possess solid knowledge and practical ability in medicine, such as diagnostics, treatment planning, and ongoing patient care.
- Candidates should possess relevant laboratory skills, including sample collection, interpretation of laboratory results, and use of diagnostic equipment.
- Candidates should possess comprehensive pet care skills, with a focus on preventive healthcare, client education, and welfare-focused decision-making.
- Recognized veterinary degree (e.g., BVetMed, BVSc, BVM&S, DVM) and current registration with the RCVS.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based clinical environment, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice, continuous professional development, and adherence to clinical governance and ethical standards.
- Experience in small animal practice in the UK is beneficial but not essential; mentoring or leadership experience is beneficial but not essential.
- Further post-graduate qualifications are beneficial but not essential.
