Veterinary Surgeon – Full or Part Time

Hawthorn Vets is an independent, family-run small animal practice with surgeries in Henfield, Hassocks, and Partridge Green, serving pets and their owners across West Sussex.

We're looking for Veterinary Surgeons with some experience to join our team. One of our long-standing vets is relocating and, as the practice continues to grow, we're also looking ahead to the future. We're therefore happy to hear from vets looking for either a full or part-time role.

We've grown steadily over the years by investing in our facilities, embracing new technology, and, most importantly, supporting our team. Our aim has always been to provide modern veterinary medicine in a friendly, approachable practice where both clients and staff feel valued.

Our team is hugely important to us. Many of our colleagues have been with Hawthorn for 10, 15, and even over 20 years, something we're incredibly proud of. We work hard to create a supportive environment where people enjoy coming to work, have the confidence to discuss cases openly, and are encouraged to develop their own interests. We believe that continuity benefits not only our team, but also our clients and their pets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Clinically, you'll enjoy a good balance of consulting and surgery, with protected operating time, dedicated admin time, and the opportunity to follow up and work up your own cases. Full-time vets work a four-day week with a 1 in 5 Saturday morning rota, and there are no out-of-hours duties as these are provided by a dedicated emergency service. If you're looking for part-time, we're happy to discuss a working pattern that suits both you and the practice.

Our Henfield practice is purpose-built and well equipped, with two operating theatres, laparoscopic and orthopaedic equipment, a full IDEXX laboratory suite, digital and dental radiography, a three-probe ultrasound scanner, modern anaesthetic monitoring, and much more. We encourage clinical freedom and are happy to support vets wishing to develop particular medical or surgical interests.
