VICE PRESIDENT, SCIENTIFIC SERVICES

A BOLDSCIENCE Vice President, Scientific Services plays an active role on the Scientific Services leadership team helping to shape and drive the company values and strategy. They are a proven leader who can quickly get up to speed, be hands-on with client work, and navigate the wider business. A VP, Scientific Services, has a strong track record in leading high-performing teams. They have a proven ability to forge relationships with clients and demonstrate a high-level of scientific, strategic, and editorial counsel across a breadth of therapy areas. As well as being a hands-on leader across multiple global accounts, a Vice President will also have an exceptional understanding of the wider business and a range of operational responsibilities, including training, financial management, resourcing, recruitment, new business, and line management. They have a people-centered approach, always putting their team and clients first, calm under pressure, and always willing to roll up their sleeves to ensure their team is supported. A Vice President is an innovator and helps us to raise the bar on delivery across the organization. They are always on the lookout for new ideas to improve BOLD’s service offering and operational efficiencies and ensure our clients stand out in the crowd. They are confident with new business (both new and organic) and are eager and hungry to play a part in BOLD’s growth.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

At BOLDSCIENCE, a VP, Scientific Services is a global leader playing a vital role in managing the Scientific Services team and has responsibilities across the wider BOLDSCIENCE business. They are a hands-on strategic partner to clients, are responsible for tactical planning, financial management, and resourcing, and play an active role in driving new business. Some typical activities will include:

Scientific Team Leadership

  • Is a member of the BOLDSCIENCE Senior Leadership Team and is a role model and culture ambassador across the Scientific Services team
  • Leads wider initiatives, such as internal training and workstreams that affect company operations and strategic direction
  • Partners with SVP, Scientific Services/Chief Scientific Officer to drive staffing discussions, including informing clients/team of staffing updates, optimizing team structure, identifying resourcing gaps in line with forecasted budget, and finding solutions to short-term resourcing needs (as relevant)
  • Participates in recruitment of senior level staff members, including review of presentation assignments and candidate selection
  • Recommends training and development of account team members and others across the wider Scientific Services team, including active participation in Scientific and BOLD meetings
  • Allows team members the freedom to operate independently but knows when to step in and provide strategic advice and input as needed to deliver excellence for our clients

People Management

  • Manages senior level direct reports (SSD, SD)
  • Guides and supports the career development of direct reports by meeting regularly, reviewing goals and objectives, providing constructive and actionable feedback; and looking for opportunities for them to learn and develop
  • Provides regular coaching, mentoring, and feedback to the broader writing team on the assigned account(s) by tracking performance, providing feedback to line managers, and looking for development opportunities
  • Collaborates across the business and is open to the ideas and contributions of others regardless of level, department, function, or account(s)

Client & Project Management

  • Demonstrates expertise in operational and scientific leadership, managing large, sometimes complex accounts
  • Partners with Client Services to co-lead designated accounts and share decision-making on matters such as new business, scientific strategy, staffing, operations, finances, and forecasting
  • Excels in solving scientific client challenges in a creative and visual way
  • Oversees Scientific team content development ensuring high quality and scientific excellence are consistently delivered
  • Monitors the pulse of deliverables and knows when additional input and course correction are required in light of new information or to meet the client’s needs
  • Leads scientific content discussions, HCP/subject matter expert calls, and client meetings
  • Builds trusted client relationships by inspiring confidence in their scientific and strategic abilities and possesses the confidence to push back and advise where necessary
  • Collaborates comfortably in shared decision-making with Client Services but also knows when to escalate matters for insight and advice

Technical Writing/Project Delivery

  • Manages a wide range of complex projects and demonstrates in-depth knowledge across a variety of brands and therapeutic areas
  • Conceptualizes and leads highly strategic/consultancy projects independently and skillfully
  • Leads and presents on-site at strategic activities with confidence, such as workshops or training meetings, with clients
  • Takes responsibility for the quality of the work performed by the entire team, ensuring that work meets client objectives; adheres to timelines and budget; and is scientifically accurate, fully referenced, and appropriate to the target audience
  • Oversees project delivery to ensure that our ethos to “Strive to be the best” is consistently delivered – provides ideas and suggestions to raise the bar on deliverables to meet the BOLD standard.
  • Provides constructive feedback and coaching to direct reports, holding them accountable for client and team dynamics

Scientific Knowledge

  • Possesses a deep understanding of therapeutic areas and strategic needs across multiple team account(s)
  • Provides regular communications to the team on product updates, medical/regulatory milestones, competitor landscape, and the wider healthcare industry
  • Demonstrates scientific knowledge and understanding of the client’s therapy area by driving the content and direction of client calls

New Business

  • Proactively identifies opportunities with existing clients for organic growth and leverages client relationships to connect BOLDSCIENCE with new business opportunities
  • Leads strategic and scientific aspects of new business proposals and pitch strategy
  • Develops new business slides that are well researched and accurate, reflecting the BOLDSCIENCE style and standard
  • Actively contributes to brainstorming sessions in support of new business activities and collaborates effectively across the business to ensure individuals are aware of and updated on actions
  • Represents the BOLDSCIENCE Scientific team on new business pitches by presenting clearly and confidently

Financial Management

  • Partners with Client Services to drive financial management including forecasting, budgets, and overage tracking across all team accounts
  • Manages project recoverability and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high quality standards and client satisfaction
  • Manages billability across team account(s) and ensures team members are sufficiently occupied
  • Uses the forecast to plan account resourcing, including recommendations for new positions to optimize account structure
  • Completes timesheets accurately on time and ensures the same from line reports and wider team members

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced, doctoral-level degree (MD, PharmD, PhD, etc) preferred
  • 12+ years’ experience within the medical communications industry
  • Experience leading high-performing teams and proven leadership and influencing skills in a commercial environment
  • Exceptional scientific writing skills and a proven track record delivering work in line with client strategy
  • Collaborative approach with well-honed communication skills
  • In-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical industry standards and compliance
