Principal Software Engineering - Equity Derivatives Technology
We’re seeking someone to join our team as a lead document automation, workflow automation and AI-enabled solutions engineer within Equity Derivatives Technology, as part of a globally distributed team. Combines strong engineering fundamentals, distributed systems experience and practical generative AI to deliver business value through iterative development.
About the Role
Morgan Stanley's market-leading institutional equity derivatives business is powered by a world-class technology platform from front to back. Our platform manages the processing of Structured Products and OTCs for the exotic derivatives business. This is a complex business area requiring smart, innovative, and self-sufficient developers to work closely with sales, trading, and quants. As the business continues to grow, we are undertaking a programme of change to increase our external connectivity via REST and FIX; as well as a strong focus on improving our pricing tools. We are looking to build out a cloud-ready, horizontally scalable pricing system with zero downtime and single-click deployment capability. This is an opportunity to get involved in shaping the pricing and workflow strategy and tooling.
Reflecting the global nature of our business and systems, the team is distributed between London, New York, Montreal, Hong Kong, and Mumbai. Our strongest location in terms of numbers is London, the ideal time zone for running a global team and where many of our business sponsors are also located. We are active in many out-of-work activities both socially and volunteering our time through various firm-sponsored initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Lead document/workflow automation and platform modernization; define scalable architecture for distributed, business-critical systems.
- Drive engineering excellence, quality, and operational resilience; mentor engineers through design reviews and hands-on coaching.
- Own end-to-end delivery of strategic initiatives, partnering with business stakeholders to translate requirements into solutions and deliver value via rapid iteration.
- Participate actively in agile ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, showcases) alongside business owners and other agile teams across the global fleet.
- Champion AI-assisted and agentic development, applying generative AI to accelerate delivery and productivity.
- Define governance/guardrails for AI-enabled development; evaluate emerging technologies for practical application.
- Design scalable, event-driven applications, services, and REST APIs; improve CI/CD, observability, and deployment automation.
- Design with performance, memory efficiency, capacity, and reusability in mind, conducting capacity analysis and management while partnering with infrastructure/platform teams to build reusable capabilities.
- Support incident management, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement through automation and monitoring.
- Ensure solutions meet security, regulatory, and operational requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
