VIRTUAL ROUTING SYSTEMS ENGINEER

We are seeking an experienced VIRTUAL ROUTING SYSTEMS ENGINEER to support the development, integration, testing and validation of software-defined routing solutions within secure and mission-critical environments.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design, development and verification of virtualised networking capabilities, supporting the delivery of next-generation routing and network management solutions. The role requires a strong software engineering background combined with hands-on experience of network protocols, virtualised environments and system-level testing.

Experience within the Defence, Aerospace, Communications or Secure Government sectors is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate and maintain virtual routing and network management software components.
  • Support the design and implementation of software-defined networking (SDN) solutions and virtualised network functions (VNFs).
  • Develop and execute verification and validation activities for routing, switching and network management functionality.
  • Create automated test frameworks, test scripts and regression test suites.
  • Conduct functional, integration, system and performance testing of virtual routing platforms.
  • Analyse network behaviour and troubleshoot complex routing, protocol and interoperability issues.
  • Support the development and optimisation of IP networking services within virtualised environments.
  • Validate routing protocols and services including OSPF, BGP, RIP, ISIS, MPLS and multicast technologies where applicable.
  • Develop and maintain software and test documentation including design descriptions, test specifications and test reports.
  • Conduct protocol analysis using industry-standard tools and packet capture technologies.
  • Support system integration activities with wider platform, communications and security teams.
  • Participate in configuration management, software release and deployment activities.
  • Contribute to secure-by-design principles and support cyber security assessments.
  • Collaborate with customers and stakeholders to define acceptance criteria and support qualification activities.
  • Support defect investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
