The Position

The Virus Production Shift Technician plays an important role within Manufacturing, supporting the production of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) antigen used in vaccine manufacturing. The role is based within a highly regulated and technically advanced manufacturing environment, contributing to the delivery of critical vaccine materials while supporting operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a fully site-based, fixed-term role in Pirbright until 31 December 2027, operating within a shift-based manufacturing environment. Details of the shift pattern will be communicated at a later stage. The role may involve night shifts, weekend working, and other non-standard hours in line with operational requirements.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Execute manufacturing activities in line with approved procedures, GMP standards, and production schedules
  • Perform CIP (Clean-In-Place) and SIP (Sterilise-In-Place) operations to support production activities
  • Operate and maintain cleanroom and laboratory environments in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Accurately complete batch records and manufacturing documentation
  • Manage raw material inventories and perform routine stock control activities
  • Operate autoclaves and perform cleaning, sterilisation, and testing activities
  • Carry out Grade A/B aseptic processing and work within Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs)
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and complete all required training
  • Support production investigations, including deviation management and root cause analysis
  • Assist with CAPA activities and implementation of corrective actions
  • Participate in daily Tier 1 meetings and contribute to team performance objectives
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the manufacturing operation
  • Provide flexible support for out-of-hours production activities when required

EHS & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with GMP, Biosafety, Biosecurity, and Health & Safety requirements
  • Report and support investigations relating to EHS incidents
  • Perform and document risk assessments
  • Complete mandatory Health & Safety training
  • Promote safe working practices and maintain a strong compliance culture

Requirements

Education

  • Good standard of education, including Maths and English
  • Scientific, technical, or manufacturing-related qualifications are advantageous

Skills & Experience

  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, vaccine, or other highly regulated manufacturing environment
  • Understanding of GMP principles and quality requirements
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments is desirable
  • Experience with aseptic processing or sterile manufacturing operations would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of deviation management and CAPA processes is beneficial
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain accurate documentation
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Proactive approach and ability to work independently when required
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing production priorities and operational needs
