Visitor Engagement Officer

Closing Date: 16/10/2026

Location: Castle Espie

Salary: £22,946.40 per annum (FTE £28,683)

Vacancy Type: Permanent

Function: Engaging visitors and communities with wetlands

About The Role

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic Visitor Engagement Officer to help us tell the story of WWT Castle Espie and the internationally important wetlands of Strangford Lough.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the next chapter for Castle Espie as we develop a more conservation-led, reserve-focused visitor experience. Working closely with the Site Manager, Head of Operations and colleagues across WWT, you will lead our visitor engagement and communications activity, helping people discover why wetlands matter and inspiring them to value and protect these remarkable places.

Castle Espie has a unique opportunity to act as a Window onto Strangford Lough, connecting visitors with its wildlife, landscapes and conservation significance. You will help bring that idea to life throughout the visitor journey, developing fresh and innovative ways for people to experience and understand the site and its wider wetland environment.

This is a varied role combining communications, interpretation, digital content, PR and face-to-face visitor engagement. You will develop and deliver Castle Espie’s annual communications plan, manage the site’s digital channels and work with WWT’s central communications, marketing and interpretation teams to create engaging campaigns and high-quality interpretation.

This is a 30-hour per-week role, based at WWT Castle Espie.

If you are a talented communicator who combines creativity with excellent organisation, genuinely enjoys engaging with people and wants to use those skills to help connect more people with wetlands and wildlife, we would love to hear from you.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

About You

You will be a confident and creative communicator who knows how to turn a great story into engaging content for different audiences and channels.

You will have experience of developing communications plans and producing content across social media, websites, email and PR, together with an understanding of how good interpretation can transform a visitor's experience of a place. You will be comfortable working with designers and other specialists to turn ideas into high-quality interpretation and communications materials.

Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys working with people. You will need to communicate confidently and professionally with visitors, volunteers, colleagues, media contacts, local communities and external partners. You will be able to work independently and use your own initiative while also being a collaborative member of the wider WWT team.

It is a broad role, so you'll need to be a good organiser and a self-starter, able to balance different priorities and deadlines without losing your eye for detail or creativity. You'll also need the confidence to take responsibility as a duty manager when required.

Experience of working within conservation isn't essential. An interest in nature, wildlife and the environment would, however, be a real advantage.

Essential criteria

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience of developing and delivering a communications plan, including detailed content across email/eCRM, PR and social media.
  • Experience of managing digital content, particularly website content.
  • Experience of working with designers and an understanding of design and print processes, ideally producing interpretation or other high-quality printed materials.
  • The ability to create relevant and engaging content for digital platforms including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Experience of working directly with visitors or members of the public face-to-face.
  • A high level of creativity and the ability to develop innovative approaches to visitor experience, PR and social media.
  • The confidence to act as a site duty manager, taking responsibility for decisions and escalating issues when appropriate.
