Salary: £13.45 per hour, increasing to £13.65 upon completion of progression milestones
Contract: Permanent
Working hours: Part-time, 24 hours a week (0.6 FTE)
About the role
Based in the foyer and shop, our Visitor Experience Team are the first point of contact for our visitors at We the Curious. You will be welcoming everyone through our front doors, co-ordinating school arrivals, selling tickets and memberships, working in the shop, and providing excellent customer service. There are many ways the Visitor Experience Team adds to the culture of fun and creativity at We the Curious.
You will be supporting different audiences, from the general public to school and community groups on both weekdays and weekends, term time and school holidays. As we experience busy and quiet periods throughout the day, the role ranges in demand. During quieter periods we focus on resetting our spaces, as well as time for some administrative tasks and training. Due to the nature of this role, teamwork, excellent customer service, and communication skills are essential.
The Visitor Experience Team sits within the Visitor Operations department at We The Curious. We work closely, and collaboratively, with the Venue Hire, Operations Admin, and the Live Science Teams creating a safe and welcoming experience for our visitors.
You will be supported by Visitor Experience Team Leaders and the Visitor Experience and Engagement Manager. The role offers progression such as enhanced pay and professional development through training and shadowing.
What will you do in this role?
Role specific responsibilities
- You will have a strong knowledge of what we the curious is and offers. You will offer guidance and information when required, ensuring everyone has a playful, smooth and inclusive visit filled with compassion.
- You will ensure our visitors are looked after including managing potential complaints or difficult situations. You will gather and accurately log visitors feedback.
- You will use our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to sell tickets and memberships but also handle any ticketing related queries. You will also scan visitors' pre-booked tickets using our NSCAN system.
- You will know and promote our membership offer and support membership sales and queries at the front desk.
- You will deliver arrival speeches to school groups of various sizes and support teachers and students when needed.
- Using our Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) system you will serve customers in the shop, prioritising excellent customer service & upselling our offer.
- In the shop you will restock, clean and maintain shop displays to a high standard of presentation & upkeep.
- You will use our ecommerce system to process deliveries and carry out retail administration tasks with support from Visitor Experience Team Leaders and Retail Manager.
- You will maintain the general upkeep, safety, and appearance of the foyer spaces to a high standard. Spaces include front desk, buggy parks, school lunch areas and Locker spaces.
- You will use radios appropriately for maintaining communication across the venue and with other team members. You will assist in evacuation, lockdown and lost child procedures.
- You will be involved in the safeguarding of our visitors, in line with WTC policies, and you will deliver First Aid when needed (training provided).
- You will be assisting the Visitor Experience and Engagement Manager and Retail Manager when needed.
- You will be supporting our other visitor-facing teams as required. When there are opportunities to do so, you may also work with other departments to support We The Curious' mission and vision. This can include some meetings and office-based work.

Shared responsibilities across the organisation

- Responsible for carefully following safeguarding policies and procedures and raising any concerns to manager/Designated Safeguarding Officer.
- Due to the responsibilities of this role, you will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check.
- General responsibility for departmental compliance with GDPR.
- Promote charity messaging across your area of work wherever possible, with support from the Development and Marketing teams.
- Support the rest of the operations team with projects when required.
- Occasional out of hours work.
- Due to the responsibilities of this role, you will be required to complete a DBS check.
What we're looking for from you
- You will have excellent customer service skills and can deliver great visitor experiences in a busy public environment. You will be enthusiastic, chatty and approachable, taking a proactive approach to customer service with a passion for excellent visitor experience.
- You have previous experience in customer service, box office, retail, or working with a public audience, and are confident working with the public and being in a public facing role.
- You have excellent communication skills and can engage both individuals and groups of people. You can easily adapt to people of different backgrounds, age and ability to make a variety of audiences feel welcome and supported. You feel confident about public speaking.
- You have excellent listening skills, and an understanding of visitor needs and expectations and have a positive attitude to solving problems and handling customer issues.
- You are comfortable adapting to quickly changing circumstances in a busy environment and remain calm and professional in developing or quickly changing situations. You are able to multitask.
- You can work on your own and as part of a team. You are happy to support other team members as well as bring enthusiasm, self-motivation, and a positive outlook as the role consists of both very busy and very quiet periods.
- You are comfortable working in a large public venue that can often be loud and busy.
- You are comfortable carrying out basic manual handling tasks, spending a lot of the day on your feet in the foyer, and participating in active tasks – if this is a barrier for you, we are happy to discuss access requirements.
- You are comfortable with using Microsoft Teams and email to communicate with your colleagues, as well as complex CRM and EPOS systems when interacting with the public and are happy to learn this as part of your role.
- You have an interest in visitor engagement, working in public venues, and have an interest We the Curious as an educational charity.
