Designer and Visual Communications Specialist
IMD is looking for an experienced designer and visual communications specialist to support our Communications team on a freelance or independent contractor basis during a period of maternity cover. This is a remote contractor engagement, not an internal IMD employment position. We are particularly interested in hearing from professionals based in the UK or Ireland.
Your portfolio is the most important part of your application. We want to see excellent design, strong visual judgement and clear evidence that you can deliver high-quality creative work under pressure, while managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can move confidently between editorial design, digital and social assets, presentations, data visualisation, web graphics and event communications. You should be comfortable taking work from brief to final delivery and working directly with multiple stakeholders.

- Social media campaigns and digital content
- Data visualisation, charts and infographics
- Presentation materials, web graphics and event communications
- Photography selection, image research and visual asset management
- Creative production across both digital and print formats

What matters most
- An outstanding portfolio demonstrating strong graphic design, visual storytelling, typography, narrative photography selection, and editorial judgement
- A proven ability to deliver excellent work under pressure and manage several deadlines at once
- Experience producing high-quality digital and print design
- Confidence working independently, making sound creative decisions and collaborating with stakeholders
- Strong Adobe Creative Suite skills, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- Professional fluency in written and spoken English
A strong bonus
- Previous experience as a photo editor or art director, employee or freelance
- Photography commissioning, image research, picture selection or visual asset management
- Experience with Ceros, Flourish, Figma, Canva, motion graphics or AI-assisted image production
- Experience managing image rights, permissions and licensing
- Experience with project management platforms such as Monday, Trello, Airtable, and Teams

Engagement note: The successful applicant would provide services to IMD as an external freelancer or independent contractor. The contractor would be responsible for maintaining the registrations, insurance and tax arrangements required in the country where the services are performed. Final engagement terms would be confirmed in the contractor agreement.
The ideal provider would have 75%+ schedule availability for November 2026 - June 2027
