Help a growing North East CIC build strong, compliant financial foundations
We’re seeking an experienced accountant or finance professional to advise on CIC accounts, bookkeeping, payroll, director expenses, grant finances, and year-end readiness.
What difference will you make?
Your expertise will help Teens Know All Academy CIC build the financial foundations needed to grow responsibly and sustainably.
- Having clear systems in place will allow us to understand our financial position, manage funding responsibly, meet our statutory obligations, and make better decisions as the organisation develops.
- It will also strengthen our readiness for grants, partnerships, and commissioned work. Funders and organisations considering working with us need confidence that money is being managed transparently and appropriately, so strong financial processes are an important part of building that trust.
- Most importantly, establishing these systems early means our leadership team can spend less time trying to navigate financial requirements and more time developing partnerships and programmes that support young people and families.
Your contribution would therefore go beyond accounting advice. You would be helping us build a stronger and more sustainable organisation capable of reaching more young people, families, and communities over time.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced finance professional who can combine technical knowledge with a practical, supportive approach.
The most important requirement is at least three years’ professional experience in accounting, finance management, or a closely related field, ideally within the UK.
We would particularly value someone with experience in one or more of the following areas:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- CIC, charity, social enterprise, or voluntary-sector accounting
- Bookkeeping systems and financial record keeping
- Preparing organisations for annual accounts and year-end requirements
- Companies House and HMRC compliance
- PAYE and payroll
- Director’s loan accounts and business expense records
- Grant accounting, including restricted and unrestricted funds
- Project budgeting and financial forecasting
- Developing proportionate financial controls and procedures
Experience working specifically with Community Interest Companies would be particularly valuable, although this is not essential if you have strong experience with charities, nonprofits, or social enterprises.
We would also welcome someone who is professionally qualified or has substantial relevant accounting experience.
Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who can explain financial requirements clearly to people who are not accountants. We want to understand the systems we put in place rather than simply handing our finances over to someone else.
Our ideal volunteer will be practical, reliable, organised, and comfortable advising an early-stage organisation. They should be able to identify what is genuinely necessary at our current stage while also helping us prepare for future growth.
As the volunteer may have access to financial information, discretion and an understanding of confidentiality are also important.

As an early-stage Community Interest Company, we want to build strong financial systems from the outset rather than waiting until the organisation becomes larger and more complex.
We are looking for an experienced accountant or finance professional who can provide practical guidance and help us establish simple, robust, and compliant financial processes.
Key priorities will include:
- Reviewing our bookkeeping structure and advising us on how best to organise our financial records.
- Advising on CIC accounting, Companies House, and HMRC requirements and helping us prepare properly for year-end.
- Helping us structure and maintain accurate director’s loan and business expense records.
- Advising on PAYE and payroll as the organisation begins to employ or pay people for operational work.
- Helping us understand how to record grant income and restricted and unrestricted funds appropriately.
- Supporting us with project and grant budgeting.
- Recommending proportionate financial controls and record-keeping procedures as we grow.
- Providing occasional guidance when financial or accounting questions arise.
An ideal first outcome would be a clear finance and compliance checklist, recommendations for how our records should be structured, and a practical action plan for the next 6–12 months.
We are looking for someone with at least three years’ professional experience in accounting or finance. Experience with CICs, charities, social enterprises, or other voluntary-sector organisations would be particularly valuable.
The role is flexible and primarily remote, with an anticipated commitment of approximately 2–4 hours per month.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
