Position Summary

The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, screening, training, scheduling, and supervising hospice volunteers who provide compassionate support to patients and their families. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards while fostering a meaningful volunteer program that enhances the quality of hospice care. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between volunteers, hospice staff, patients, families, and community organizations to promote volunteer engagement and community awareness.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Retention

  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to build and maintain an active volunteer program.
  • Represent the organization at community events, volunteer fairs, schools, churches, and civic organizations.
  • Conduct interviews, background checks, reference checks, and onboarding for prospective volunteers.
  • Develop initiatives to recognize and retain volunteers through appreciation events and ongoing engagement.

Volunteer Training & Development

  • Coordinate and facilitate hospice volunteer orientation in accordance with Medicare Conditions of Participation and state regulations.
  • Provide ongoing education, mentoring, and annual competency training.
  • Maintain volunteer training records and continuing education documentation.

Volunteer Management

  • Match volunteers with patients and families based on individual needs, preferences, and volunteer skills.
  • Coordinate volunteer schedules and assignments.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Address volunteer concerns and resolve conflicts professionally.
  • Maintain regular communication with volunteers and hospice interdisciplinary team members.

Patient & Family Support

  • Ensure volunteers provide compassionate companionship and emotional support.
  • Coordinate volunteer assistance with respite care, bereavement support, administrative projects, and community outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure volunteer services complement the patient’s plan of care.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate volunteer files, including:
    • Applications
    • Health screenings
    • Background checks
    • Competencies
    • Annual education
    • Service hours
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare, state, Joint Commission, and organizational standards.
  • Track volunteer utilization and prepare required reports.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Healthcare Administration, Communications, Human Resources, or related field preferred. An associate degree with relevant experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Two or more years of volunteer coordination, community outreach, healthcare, hospice, nonprofit, or human resources experience preferred. Experience working with volunteers is strongly preferred. Hospice or home care experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of hospice philosophy and end-of-life care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to recruit, motivate, and retain volunteers.
  • Effective public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic medical records.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and computer use.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to travel throughout the service area to visit volunteers, patients, and community events.

Working Conditions

  • Office, hospice inpatient, patient home, and community settings.
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for volunteer training, appreciation events, or recruitment activities.
  • Local travel required.
